BRIDGEWATER — Police believe the very person who gave Karissa Boudreau life also took it away.
They arrested Penny Patricia Boudreau in Halifax on Friday and will charge her in Bridgewater provincial court Monday morning with the first-degree murder of her daughter.
That means police believe she planned and deliberately killed her 12-year-old child.
"We are pleased to announce today that after countless hours of joint investigation, we have arrested the person we believe to be responsible for this homicide," RCMP Supt. Blair McKnight, the officer in charge of criminal operations, said at a news conference in Bridgewater on Saturday afternoon.
"Investigators feel confident that there was only one person responsible for this homicide," said Brent Crowhurst, the Bridgewater police chief. "We do not expect anyone else to be charged in this case."
Ms. Boudreau had previously placed a handwritten note at her daughter’s grave in Shelburne County. "You’re forever in our hearts & we love you always," Ms. Boudreau wrote on a little card with the image of a child angel, pink and purple flowers at her feet. "Never will you be forgotten & we know you’re safe with God."
Supt. McKnight said it has been an agonizing five months for Karissa’s family and for a public anxious to know their own children would be safe and that the right person would be charged for Karissa’s death.
"Investigators want the family to know that our focus has always been on Karissa, and working to ensure the person responsible for her homicide was brought to justice," Supt. McKnight said. "We understand how difficult these weeks have been for them, knowing the person responsible was still free."
He said investigators gave the family what limited information they could.
"I want to thank them now for their understanding during the time when we could not give them details of our investigation."
Supt. MacKnight also thanked the public for its help. "Numerous tips came in. All were followed up, and a number of them did provide valuable information."
He said there were times when people wondered whether charges would ever be laid, "but even during these times, our officers received positive support from the public both on the street and through the media."
Chief Crowhurst said police "are limited in what can be divulged at times without compromising the integrity of the investigation."
"Police have to weigh the public’s right to know versus the integrity of that investigation."
But he said police were confident from the beginning that Karissa’s killing was an isolated incident and that Karissa knew her killer.
Ms. Boudreau has told police the last time she saw her daughter was after an argument in the parking lot of Sobeys in the Bridgewater Mall at about 5:30 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 27. She reported Karissa missing about two hours later.
An extensive ground, air and underwater search turned up no sign of the missing girl. Two weeks later, Karissa’s frozen remains were found by a passerby on an embankment of the LaHave River on the outskirts of Bridgewater. Police soon confirmed she had been murdered.
In February, police executed search warrants at the Jubilee Road apartment where Ms. Boudreau lived with her boyfriend, Vernon Macumber. Two people were arrested and a third questioned, but all were released without charges. Police have not said who those people were.
Ms. Boudreau was briefly hospitalized in Bridgewater in late February, and after that neighbours reported police had been called to the couple’s apartment because of loud fighting and arguing. Later, Ms. Boudreau moved to Halifax and has been working at the Superstore on Joseph Howe Drive. She and Mr. Macumber had worked at the Superstore in Bridgewater.
Myra Jodrey of New Germany was shopping at the Bridgewater Superstore on Saturday when the news came that Ms. Boudreau had been charged.
"It makes me feel sick to think that her mother could do that," said Mrs. Jodrey, who has a seven-year-old son.
JoAnne Giffin, who was shopping at Sobey’s on Saturday afternoon, stopped briefly in the same parking lot where Ms. Boudreau said she last saw her daughter. "It’s just so shocking," Ms. Giffin said.
Kendra Venoit, 24, went to the news conference because she wanted to know who police had arrested. "I think it’s absolutely disgusting," she said. "She became Bridgewater’s little girl."
Ms. Venoit said she hopes Karissa may now rest in peace and that the arrest will bring the community some closure, but she said she is still overwhelmed by the charge. "I still can’t comprehend the idea that any mother could do that to their child."
RCMP media relations officer Sgt. Mark Gallagher said police will not release any more information now that the case is before the courts. "We have a family . . . an extended circle of relatives, the local community and indeed citizens across the province who are relying on us to ensure the investigation and the court process are not jeopardized or influenced in any way."
Ms. Boudreau is set to appear in court at 9:30 a.m. Monday. A black structure was in place at the courthouse Saturday in preparation for security checks of all people entering the building.

| There was much speculation about this when the crime occured, and nobody believed this to be a random act. I thought that possibly it was the mother's boyfriend or the girl's father, but I'm not surprised that it was the mother. Evil knows no bounds. |
