LEMIRE Hearing - Moves Location

NOTE New Location:

Holiday Inn Oakville Centre

Argus Ballroom

590 Argus Road

Oakville, Ontario

Sept 15 – 17, 2008

9:30am to 5:00pm daily

For an unknown reason, the Canadian Human Rights Tribunal has arbitrarily moved the location for the closing arguments in the Lemire case to a different hotel in Oakville. They did this with no notice or submissions from any of the parties involved.

A quick check of the two facilities reveal that the hearing room at the new location is about half the size of the previous hotel, the Quality Hotel & Executive Suites Oakville. The hearing was scheduled to be held in the Northampton Room, which according to the hotels website “can accommodate up to 140 guests”. The new location at the Holiday Inn Oakville Center, is substantially smaller. According to the Holiday Inns website, this room can hold between 32 and 100 people depending on the configuration. Since this will be a hearing room setup, the room is basically cut in half with counsel tables and chairs, and a large raised table for the tribunal “member”, so he can pretend to be a real judge. With luck, the room should have seating for 50-60 spectators. A far cry from the 140 of the previous hotel.

With the recent publicity surrounding the Lemire case, as well as the immense preexisting interest, the room might well be overflowing with spectators. During most of the hearings in Toronto (including the Federal Court, where staff had to on at least three occasions bring more seating into the room .. and still people were overflowing into the lobby), and of course the famous, March 25 hearing in Ottawa, the hearings were filled to capacity.
