QUEBEC - Prime Minister Stephen Harper made an irreconcilable political blunder by refusing to attend the Olympic opening ceremonies in China, Jean Chretien charged Monday.
Speaking to a packed room of lawyers, at the annual meeting of the Canadian Bar Association, the former prime minister said the Conservative government has burned its bridges with the emerging superpower, where officials have long memories and are unlikely to forgive.
"They have a collective memory there, this is very important and plays a big role," Chretien said at the annual meeting of the Canadian Bar Association.
"It is the second biggest economy in the world. In 50 years it will be the biggest economy in the world. Starting with (former prime minister John) Diefenbaker, and then with Trudeau, and all of us, and we established very good relations with China," Chretien later told reporters.
"And suddenly, you break a bridge. It would have been easy just to be there."
Harper, citing a scheduling conflict, was one a handful of world leaders who skipped the lavish opening ceremony on Aug. 8. The prime minister's failure to attend has been widely viewed as a snub to China, whom he has repeatedly criticized for its record on human rights.
Chretien told Canwest News Service Monday that he travels to China once or twice a year to give public affairs advice to private-sector clients.
In his address to the breakfast meeting of lawyers, Chretien said Harper's decision to skip out on the Olympics was one of several moves that will keep him in China's bad books.
Another serious affront to China was to bestow honorary Canadian citizenship on the Dalai Lama of Tibet, he said.
Justice Minister Rob Nicholson was also scheduled to speak at the annual gathering of the Canadian Bar Association. |

Chretien is a communist just like his intellectual leader and adviser, Maurice.
The only thing I'll grant Harper is that he is somewhat better than Chretien, but that still isn't much praise.

| Our media are so gutless and/or biased that they will allow Chretien to spout this nonsense when it is clear that he has a personal and family interest in sucking up the the Chi-coms. His grandchildren's fortune is tied up with Power Corp and its business dealings with China through TotalElfFina and other corporations. Chretien has been tied to the massive expansion of coal fired electricity plants in China. I think he'd sell his grandmother to the Chi-com gulags if he thought it would give a business advantage in that country, but you'll never get a sense for any of this by reading the MSM. |

Yes! As with Strong, Chretien doesn't care about the repression, forced abortions, one-child policies, mobile execution vans, harvesting of prisoners' organs, support for genocide in Darfur, terrible working conditions, etc. that is the Chinese reality, as long as his pockets continue to get lined with greenbacks.
Sick. His Order of Canada should be dripping with blood, too. |

No one seems to have it straight as to whether the Olympics are political or not, or whether they are about the countries or the athletes.
I think that Harper got it right by making a political statement without affecting the athletes. There was no suggestion of a boycott but he gave the appearance that the Canadian government did not acknowlege the political legitimacy of China.
Does anyone know what his alleged "scheduling conflict" was? |

I agree with Chretien. Not often that can be said.
The Olympics are the worse and most cowardly way possible to make a political statement.
China has lifted 300 million out of poverty - you won't change a human rights misery by sanctimonious posing. China will change once its economy and society keep developing.
Engage on trade, behind the scenes politicking and don't embarassment the chinese gov't - it won't work, it never has, it only leads to repression. Sometimes in life there are smarter ways to get what you want without hissy fits, using force or trying to embarass someone. And please stop the drivel over Tibet. |
