Less than 28% of all Canadian citizens are officially categorized as 'french'. Yet, we have entered out fourth decade of forced bilingualism that amounts to nothing more than social engineering.

From the Quebec / Ontario border to the Pacific Ocean, it should be English only.

"tanpro", intentionally or not, you are giving francos the ammunition with wrong statistic.

The reality is:

- Nationally, 22.5% are francophones (those whose mother
tongue is French). Most of them live in one province - Quebec.

- only 4% francophones live outside Quebec.

- Nationally, only 12% Canadians are really bilingual, according
to the survey by Jack Jedwab from the Council on Canadian Studies

East of the Quebec/NB border as well.

All right, Jeez! We get it, Carmel. You don't believe in the value of a democratic society. You like being the token liberal leftist nutjob on FD. rabble babble called - they are a little short on their 'gimme-gimme selfish Canadian' quota.

You said you are 34 year old. It's time for you to get familiar with the Official Languages Act, which specifies the conditions for services in French outside of the regions that require it. That is WHERE NUMBERS WARRANT.
4% in Ontario does NOT warrant.

Do not believe the language gestapo kommissar Dyane Adam. She must be fired by the new Conservative government. Adam lied and mislead the Parliament for years on the supposedly wide support for bilingualism among Canadians. Now she admits that "support" is rather bleak and comes solely from francos like yourself who call for bilingualism for anglos, but demand segregation in French-only for themselfves to mantain "culture purity".

Want to live in French? Go home. We want Canada free from Nazi experiments.

The irony is that in many of the regions that allegedly 'require' bilingualism, most of the French speak English on a daily basis, and many of these allegedly French people do not even know how to write French because they never write it. I went to the patent office in Hull to check on an idea for an invention and see if anyone had already thought of it, and 99.9% of the patents are written in English. I came across ONE patent written in French and could not read it. I took it over to the service desk, where two francophone women were on duty, speaking quietly to eachother in french. "May I elp you sir" one of them finally said.
It was a small document , so I asked if one of them would read it and give me some idea of what it said. She took the patent from me , squinted at it, frowned,
turned it over, looked at the back ,glanced at the front again, then passed it to her coworker. The coworker did not even try to read it. She just shrugged and passed it back to me.
I said "you don't understand it either?"

Neither of them answered me, and pretended I was not even there.

Canada, not likely to proceed far intact anyway once Alberta puts a new hole in Ottawa's face and simply halts the cheques, can never aspire to move on into the future until it ditches this French "culture" fantasy BS that nobody gives a damn about. French belongs in France. This is nothing but a multi-billion dollar extortion sham to further a self-envisioned master-race based utopian dream propped up (as always) at the expense of others from day one.

The basis being, that French will be the language in Quebec, and English will be the language elsewhere.

The rights of English and other linguistic minorities in Quebec will have to be sacrificed in order to do this, and to end bilingualism elsewhere.

I personally think an autonomous French speaking Quebec within the Confederation is the only logical Federalist option left.

You can't have it both ways. If we want to end official bilingualism, we will have to budge on this issue, if we want Quebec to remain within Canada.

This could be a start to a reasonable solution, but shouldn't service in Ottawa be bilingual? Given that it's the seat of our federal govt, I'd think it would have to be.

As to ending official bilingualism...

I wonder how many anglo Canadians spoke French before the bill was introduced and whether that number has increased. (Many more French Canadians also spoke English back then.) It makes sense in this era of globalization for people to be fluent in at least two major languages, preferably three (Spanish). But how to encourage that? Perhaps official bilingualism has been necessary to get those who do speak both languages to do so - because, e.g., they wanted to be Canadian politicians, Supreme Court judges, international wheelers and dealers.

What carrot, rather than the stick of legislation, might achieve the same thing?

Sacrifice English language rights in Québec??....BTW...there are MORE Anglophones in Québec than Francophones in Onrtario.....WE EXIST...

I'm not giving up my rights so those who sit 2 or 3 time zone away can get the French off of their corn flakes.....

You folks sit out there....bobbing your heads knowing nothing about other parts of Canada...guess folks in the 'east" are just as bad...

This is my issue...just as "you" want all your oil money.....I will not be a "sacrifice"

Two langauges are more fun!!...lived in "uni-language land".....kind of boring!

"Quebec Anglophone Community

While English is the principal language of North America, the Anglophones of Quebec are nevertheless in a minority situation in their province. More than 590,000 Anglophones of Quebec live primarily in the Montreal area, but are also found in small but dynamic communities across the province, such as Pontiac, the Eastern Townships, Gaspé, the Lower North shore and the Magdalen Islands"

What rights? That's the whole point. Bill 101 doesn't GIVE you any rights. English as the official language and French available where numbers warrant would give you everything you need.
