Abolish Bilingualism

Many conservatives were (rightly) agitated when they saw that the document which provides the basis for the creation of the new Conservative Party of Canada states that the new party will support ‘progressive’ social policies. I fully understand this as, in leftist circles, ‘progressive’ is generally a code word for ‘perverted’. However, what I found equally alarming within the document was its casual affirmation that the new party would support the tyrannical and monstrous policy of bilingualism which has been forced upon us by the Federal Government and enshrined in the Constitution which is the hideous legacy of Pierre Elliot Trudeau. It is absurd that in a free and democratic society I and others should have a foreign language forced upon me, especially when the speakers of that language fail to show any respect for my language in the Province that they control. A principled party of the right should commit itself both to repealing official bilingualism and salting the fields from which such a repellent idea sprang.

Considering how much public support Official Bilingualism has, though, I think the only way to put an end to it would be through incrementalist policies, by nibbling at its edges.

One example of such a possible strategy I've presented in another thread would be for the Ministry of Edcucation of Ontario to give each public school the freedom to teach the second-language of its choice, rather than force them all to teach French. Though such a policy might not go far enough, this might be a good example of an incrementalist policy, or 'nibbling at the edges' if you prefer.

Official Bilingualism could perhaps be compared to the core of an onion (and just as irritating too). To get to that core, we first need to peel the skin off one layer at a time, looking to change less controverial policies that are less likely to lead to public opposition, but that still remove one more layer of the protective skin around that core.

As long as there is so much public support for Offiial Bilignulism, along with all the spin-off policies creating a protective layer around it, we're not likely to succeed in our attempt at removing it in a full frontal attack, but might be able to at least remove some of the protective skin around it, thus making it more vulnerable at a later stage. As far as I'm concerned, seeing how 'sacred' Official Bilingualism is to many, incrementalism might be the only way to go.

I would certainly be open to other incrementalist ideas in this regard. Perhaps if we could brainstorm a list of them, some of these ideas might in fact be able to gain more public support and might be worth adopting by either a provincial or federal party depending on the specific issue.
