Beating the Liberals with a make-shift, jury-rgged, minority coalition government will buy us only greater headaches down the line when voters at large become even more frustrated with the petty-politicking into which such coalitions inevitably dissolve.
If those of us who call ourselves conservatives cannot agree on the crucial issues, and cannot speak out on them together, we have little hope of improving (reducing) our governmental overburden.
And I doubt that we can get our acts together without somehow instituting order and leadership into our free-wheeling "debates" in conservative venues like FreeDominion.
Meantime - - Have fun on our continuing downhill slide - - While it's still relatively smooth. Cause it's-a-gonna git real rough further along the way.
And we ain't doin' nuthin' yet tuh stop it.

Would the Tories reciprocate? It's only fair, right? And how about not running against each other's incumbents? This would all be progress, but it's only workable if BOTH parties do it. Is that what you're proposing? |

I thought you said you didn't support the conservatives? What if we and the Bloc melted away and Preston Manning won the PC Leadership (I think this is their new plan btw). Where or where could we go and be heard? _________________ Rally to the Title of Liberty |

[Yes the Tory party is a conservative party and many of their members are as true blue as you are. Why conservatives left the Tory party to follow the pied piper Manning into DoRCishness instead of staying and fighting for a conservative party that extended across Canada is beyond me. [/quote]
Did you not leave and support the CA under MR. Day? Why oh why is beyound me? _________________ Rally to the Title of Liberty |

Apparently, you joined a cause rather than a political party, lost the fight and left bitter. Politics is not a nice game and too many participants consider any tactic acceptable to gain an advantage. No party is immune from the antics and actions of amoral members.

The membership numbers I quoted are accurate. 100,000+ with 45% in Ontario.

It is, not may be, possible to stop demeaning one another’s parties and Leaders and get on with building Party support and election readiness. There is no point in throwing out insults or demands on ‘the other side’. _________________ Hall Monitor of the Shadowy GroupTM

I tried to make a difference and insure that CA members would uphold their constitution and be principled enough to stand behind their democratically elected leader but I was wrong. I left the CA because they are not worth the effort and I doubt very much if your membership is around 100,000. It's probably more like 60-80,000 or will be by this March when those who joined to vote for another leader paid their $10.
As for changes within the PCPC I was very pleased with the progress made in moderizing their policies and the conservative agenda that was adopted in Edmonton.
Across Canada and in Ontario the PC is the second choice of the majority of Canadians. That has been established in poll after poll. Because the CA now enjoys over 60 MPs in Ottawa thanks to Stock has no bearing on what the mood of the voter is today or will be next election. The CA will be lucky to grab 45 seats and all of them will be in the west.
It may be possible for the PCPC and the CA to elected enough MPs so that they can form a coalition government and then become one conservative party again. That would be ideal and definately something to work towards. And of this group 18 secound place finishes
So the final numbers are
Won seats Alliance 2
PC 0
Secound Place finishes
Alliance 79
PC 9
Where the neither Alliance or CA finished first or secound who was next
Alliance 7
PC 4
So Hiti the 45 seats that you alluded to are actually 13 for the Pc and then 88 for the Alliance. So I am OK with the suggestion that whoever finished higher in the last election runs a candidate and the other party does not. Oh wait a minute in the pesky world of the PC policies they MUST run 301 candidates so will therefore only cooperate if it is their own best interest Source of info Elections Canada web site.

In fairness I only looked at Ontario under the previous formula. the CA did nothing in the Maritimes so I conceed it would be best left to the PC although I don't think it would have changed results much we got so few votes.
Quebec with some minor exception we both did terrible less than 10% each in most. I again have no trouble bowing out of Quebec and allowing PC to run there unoppossed by the CA.
Manitoba would be all but 2 ridings to the CA but for giving up all of quebed Manitoba is a fair trade.
Sask all to the CA.
Alberta all to the CA (lets face it without Liberal help Joe would not have won Calgary Centre)
BC all to the CA.
Yukon and NWT to the CA (wouldn't change thingsin NWt but Yukon maybe)
Nunavet to PC we didn't run last time.
Again I think the CA would be open to this, it only makes sense, I don't think that the PC's would with their very recent 301 ruling. Perhaps we in the Ca can be the bigger group and do this on our own accord. This would show Canada we mean to keep the best interests of Canadians at heart. Would the PC reciprocate? That is the question? _________________ Rally to the Title of Liberty |

| hiti wrote: | | It may be possible for the PCPC and the CA to elected enough MPs so that they can form a coalition government and then become one conservative party again. That would be ideal and definately something to work towards. The CA can start that ball rolling by looking at the 45 seats across Canada where vote splitting elected a liberal and not run candidates in those ridings that had the PCPC vote in second place. It's time Hapless lead by example. If this should happen there would be an additional gain of between 9-12% and add that to the 15% and the 19% and we have a minority conservative government. |
Umm... hiti, Harper offered the Tories a full coalition and a single slate of candidates (which would obviously involve the CA standing down in ridings where the PCs are stronger). He made this offer twice. Stock made similar offers. Clark, MacKay, the whole lot of them have rejected every legitimate offer -- except to take DoRC defectors and split the CA. (In your anti-DoRC zeal, you somehow fail to remember that the PCs were willing co-conspirators with the DoRC project, bringing them in and giving them Parliamentary status at the same time they were spurning genuine offers for discussion from Stock, John Reynolds, Grant Hill, etc. Remember Mont Tremblant where the Tories invited the DoRCs and selected CA members they thought they could cherry pick, while refusing to invite Stock or his leadership team?)
I am sure that if a conservative leader (Harris, Flaherty, even Lord) won the PC leadeship, that Harper would renew the offer - but there is about zero chance of this happening.
Look, I was a staunch Stock guy. I also want a PC/CA coalition or merger. But Stock lost, and merger ain't gonna happen -- because of the Red Tories led by the Gay Pride Parade Marshall himself. So why not at least support the least bad and most conservative party and leader on the table, which at this point is the CA and Harper (with Stock serving as a highly effective front bench Foreign Affairs critic). _________________ "The only thing necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." - Edmund Burke |

Actually TRS, I believe you are mistaken, out west here the two words were: Brian Mulroney. _________________ "If Martin doesn't surprise us by becoming a principled leader, then at least we can be comforted that he is preparing his lips for a whole lot of American butt kissing."

Brian Mulroney will go down in history as a great prime minister. You may see him as lyin bryan, but he was the most honest prime minister of the 90s (lol).
He is responsible for martin's zero deficits, for nafta, and unlike his contemporaries (chretien and trudeau) he actually had a foreign policy. _________________ http://xkcd.com/675/ |

David, I said the ridings where the COMBINED PCPC and CA vote allowed a Liberal to be elected..... not ridings where anyone was second or third. Meaning that there are 45+ seats up for grabs.
Example:
Liberal 10,000 votes
PCPC 8,000 votes
CA 5,000 votes
NDP 1,200 votes
In the above riding the combined PCPC and CA vote was 13,000 or enough to beat the liberal. In this riding the CA should not run a candidate and if we reverse the PCPC to 5,000 votes and the CA to 8,000 votes then the PCPC should not run a candidate.
Never mind who came in second or who came in third. There are appriximately 45+ ridings that could be won by a conservative candidate and that would mean the liberals would lose the election and the PC and the CA could form a coalition government. It would be a start to one conservative party. _________________

That is only true if the PCPC voters vote for the CA.
Isn't there a post on the site here about how the PCPC people have decided to support the Liberals in ridings where the PCPC is dead?

In this case the PCPC would not be dead but instead the goal would be to elect a conservative candidate across Canada. Each party would have a slate of candidates in around 280+ or - ridings and they would be campaigning as conservatives. _________________

| I think in this scenario, a lot of Tories would vote Alliance in those ridings which the PCPC stood down, and vice versa, just as it's intended. This would lead to a parliamentary coalition, so why not put as many MPs into that coalition as possible? In this case, a Tory MP in my riding would mean an extra CA/PC conservative coalition MP. It's better than having a Liberal. Much, much better. |
