I was born in a welfare state / Ruled by bureaucracy / Controlled by civil servants / And people dressed in grey / Got no privacy, got no liberty / Cos the twentieth century people / Took it all away from me. - 20th Century Man by The Kinks

Not to mention that Quebec forces a lot of unwanted policies on the rest of Canada...

There's a couple issues here.

The first is that I don't think these consequences were unknown. The separatists have known about them for years and have said this is why Canada isn't working. In fact I have heard Duceppe say that this doesn't work for Canada, and it doesn't work Quebec. We've accused them of whining and blackmailing Canada when all they have done is be honest with the rest of the country.

For their part, the federalists are trying to make it work. Nevertheless, it won't. The reason is because Quebec has lost its Catholic faith. Without the Catholic faith, Quebec has no heritage to protect, which in turn means that French will continue to die in North America.

The total real dollar cost of Official Bi-Lingualism is about 600B taxdollars and climbing. The hidden cost of lives and carreers ruined is unknowable. Pretty disgusting eh. Especially considering that it has not worked. Only about 12% of all Canadians are really bi-lingual and Quebec has become a fascist uni-lingual state.
If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen. -- Samuel Adams, speech at the Philadelphia State House, August 1, 1776--"If You Haven't Suffered Enough It Is Your God Given Right To Suffer Some More" Wm. Aberhart Alberta Premier

Not to mention lost productivity and creativity with anglophone Canadians immigrating to the United States.
