We are getting to the bottom of that slippery slimy slope now.

There will be plenty of laws to imprison Christians in a few short years I predict, nominal christians have nothing to fear, till the end.

Any word on prison for sharia teachings? Beheadings? Stonings? Genital mutilations?

I would never attend a church that taught that. It's despicable.

I got spanked a few times as a child. Would you consider my parents despicable?

I find the following interesting:

While that barred Caminiti from having contact with members of his extended family who are church members, Sumi did allow him to be with his wife, their children and their grandchildren. She turned down a request to delay his prison sentence until after an appeal of his case.

Obviously then, there's no concern about his actual conduct towards his own children, or he would have been charged with child abuse as opposed to conspiracy to commit child abuse. This definitely seems like a trumped up charge to punish him for his ideas rather than what he actually did. Also, it seems like a perfect example of how a seemingly well meaning law (i.e. against "conspiracy to commit child abuse") can be used to crush political or religious dissidents.

My guess is that the judge just took a personal disliking to him and this will get overturned on appeal. Sad that he will be spending time in prison, regardless of the eventual outcome.

If we start filling up prisons with people who hold the wrong opinions, according to some liberal elitist world view, then we might as well divide our countries into two and separate like they did in India and Pakistan in 1947, some going one way and some the other, with the trains stopping for mass brawls along the way.

These elites have been very careful to avoid prosecuting too many people at any one time, or moving the boundaries too far into the mainstream. Fundamentalist Christians make easy targets, as the media can be expected to cover for the state, and even libertarian onlookers will often not say much.

I'm sure it is possible to invent a philosophy that allows for spanking at the mildest provocation, and this is not a great form of parenting, but to ban corporal punishment entirely seems unwise to me (I never had to parent boys but I dimly recall being one). I got that response to my antics on occasion and look how well I turned out, haven't mailed a body part yet. :)

I may get into that depending on how much time I spend in the nation's capital.

I suppose I was 10 maybe 11 years old at the time- my first adventures in smoking.

It was going pretty good although my buddy and I were looking a bit on the green shade. The worst happened. My mother arrived on the scene. Her solution? She "tanned my ass".
That would be back in the summer of 1955- a nice sunny summer holiday day. I do recall the details.
\She marked me for life. From 1955 on every time a tried to smoke a cigarette it tasted like my "ass being tanned".
When I had a triple bypass several years back I was told that if I had been a smoker I would not have made it.
Momsie could have gave me a time out. She could have sent me to my room. No pie for two weeks?
I doubt there was anything more effective across the years in coming to spoil my taste for cigarettes.
A mother doing the right thing 57 years ago saved me a fortune in cash and a medical disaster.

Well, what can the Lord possibly know about disobedient children?

He was convicted of conspiracy to commit child abuse. So who were the other conspirators and what sentence did they get? One thing to note is that he was convicted by a jury. A two year sentence seems ridiculous, not to mention the extended period of "supervision" where he is prevented from associating with his congregation.

What the hell did he say that could get him 2 years in jail?

I do not hate my kids, promise.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_IQNSpd8 ... e=youtu.be is a good video outlining a different perspective on those verses.

For the record I don't think that anyone should go to jail for those kind of comments but I wouldn't expose myself or my family to it so I would go elsewhere. I would not allow anyone in my life that was pro-spanking to oversee their care.

there are occasions when a paddling on the hiney is the best way to emphasize a behaviour is verbotten.

Dr. Spock had it wrong, and quite frankly messed up an awfull lot of kids whose parents believed everything he perscribed.

I don't agree.

I do not follow Dr. Spock. I do follow the whole concept and philosophy of grace-based parenting which is rooted in Christianity.

If other people wish to spank their children I am not suggesting that this should be illegal or that they should not be allowed to parent their own children. I simply do not want my children to have their care overseen, even for an afternoon, by someone with those values.
