A growing oil and gas sector will mean at least 9,500 additional jobs will need to be filled in the next three years, according to a new study.

The Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada released the study Tuesday showing a growing need for skilled oil and gas workers.

Gary Leach, executive director of the Small Explorers and Producers Association of Canada, said a booming sector and aging workforce will mean a variety of specialized jobs will need to be filled – and soon.

Retiring baby boomers spur oilpatch labour crunch

Age-related attrition causing gap of skilled workers in oil and gas industry

By Dina O'Meara, Calgary Herald May 30, 2012

CALGARY — The Canadian oilpatch will have to recruit almost 10,000 people by 2015 just to maintain service levels as baby boomers retire and experienced personnel are recruited to warmer resource basins, said a national organization.

Older workers leaving the industry represent a "growing and alarming" gap in experienced and skilled labour in the oil-and-gas sector across the board, said the Petroleum Human Resources Council of Canada Tuesday.

Why don't they just say they need a million people? Or ten million people?

Business will never claim that they've got enough people to staff the jobs offered.

Why would they?

The spin offs go far deeper. More people means more construction and new home building, more service related jobs, more teachers, nurses, restaurants, etc. The community support structure behind a single job in the patch or the oil sands is probably three or four additional jobs for every one in the energy industry.
