What's going on up there in Ohio? That looks ugly. It looks like Cleveland is about to get smoked.

I see what you mean- I was so busy looking at Beryl & thinking about widow-ladies & generators that I did not notice that... let's have a look:

Seems to be a storm over the Great Lakes... meanwhile the Damn Dog is shedding his winter undercoat and there is hair everywhere...

I see the Indians are playing in Chicago today - which is pretty much where that mess is likely headed, the southern tip of Lake Michigan as it's shown there currently fringing Lake Erie. Baseball schedules/cancellations later may well be the best weather indicator up that way.

For that matter, the pocket SW of that is heading toward Indiana and the Indy 500 is tomorrow - a half million people exposed outside in one captive location.

I hadn't even thought about the race. Guess it's time to scoot out to Tractor Supply & see if they have 4 3/8" grade five bolts & fittings to make that hitch stronger. BRB...

Mem'ries & their persistence... I went out to Tractor Supply and got a handful of grade 8 fasteners- the strongest they have. The old bolts that attach the hitch to the former welder's cart were 5/16” grade fives.

Right on the way to the store is River Ridge, a fairly new subdivision, pretty upscale, and years ago Emily & I had attended a party at a house in there.

Like so much of the past I relied on her to flesh out my recall of it and all I vaguely remember is it was a get-together of students to honor a couple of music teachers they had in common. I'd swear Artiss DeVolt was one of them but for the life of me I cannot remember the other. Or any of the students.

Anyway, every time I go by, like to the Vet's I have had a hankering to go in and see if I could locate the house- so this time I did. I drove well in but for the life of me could not find the place so eventually I turned around and headed home to my puppy-boy.

It's funny how one thing triggers another- I passed the abandoned pancake house where I had my first breakfast after Helen died, and that spurred the memory of the first dinner- a Taco Salad at Wendy's on US 17- that became a Larry's Giant Sub shop.

It's strange how your dead persist.

Since Artiss DeVolt Zaccarias died in 2000, 93 years old, that party was obviously prior to that.

One lucky break on the hitch? The hitch plate itself was already drilled for 3/8" bolts- and a good thing that is since the hitch attachment cannot be fitted into my small, remaining drill press. The big one got sold during those hard times to pay a check I carelessly bounced. Good times, good times...

Drilling the welder cum generator has already soaked one shirt so I'm taking a break to cool off some.

Funny, no matter how many times I say that and click my heels, I don't get back to Kansas.

Got back from shopping. The smallest bottle of Accent- half the size of the one I exhausted-- is $2.99.

The big bottle of vanilla extract for milkshakes? $10.49... I decided the generic for $3.49 was a better idea.

I went over to Emily's facebook wall to post this:

John here- for any friends or acquaintances wondering what happened to Emily, the story of her death is here:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=132035
And my story of the aftermath is here:
viewtopic.php?f=1&t=132803

and there was a message from that friend from long ago- so I pointed her to those links- she had not heard.
Once in a blue Moon that still happens with Helen, too.

PSA- I just caught this at SoGlo neighborhood watch:

FYI!!!! IMPORTANT message!! I have just received some very valuable info. Please be on the look out for a white truck(side has faded Goodyear tire emblem). This truck will be enclosed like a delivery type truck. These folks are associated with the dog theft/fighting that is occurring! We do know for sure they have at least posed as pool cleaners but do not be surprised if they are yard workers, tree trimmers or whatever fits. Do NOT approach them but call law enforcement immediately if you see this truck, if they visit your neighborhood or if you see anything suspicious! KEEP YOUR babies safe and secure and your watchful eye on them at all times. This is truly happening and we need to ban together, be strong and protect these innocent lil furry ones! Thank you!!!

In the Up and Out... or the long ago & far away... I loved a girl who was a groupie for The Allman Brothers Band...

Insty's report...http://pjmedia.com//instapundit/

I WONDER IF HE MISSES CHER? Gregg Allman: Engaged to 24-year-old girlfriend. http://www.washingtontimes.com/news/2012/may/25/gregg-allman-engaged-24-year-old-girlfriend/

“Eat a Peach” was the catchphrase then... and yes, this old grandfatherly type had eaten a few back in the Up & Out...

Here is the only picture I have of Duane Allman's lover of way back when...

Image

It was taken at 300 Arnold Road and everything you see in it is gone...
( Forever, to the Sea...)

In the 30 years that have passed she went far away, became a mother... maybe even a grandmother... I don't know where she fetched up... but wherever she is?

Liz, I wish you well...

It may be that in some other time, in another place, I will behold your pretty face again...

Until that time, I hope you are well and happy...

It was just one of those things
Just one of those crazy flings
One of those bells that now and then rings
Just one of those things

It was just one of those nights
Just one of those fabulous flights
A trip to the moon on gossamer wings
Just one of those things

If we'd thought a bit, of the end of it
When we started painting the town
We'd have been aware that our love affair
Was too hot, not to cool down

So good-bye, dear, and amen
Here's hoping we meet now and then
It was great fun
But it was just one of those things...

The Heavy Equipment Guy comments.

Yes, I am saying goodbye to that life I had. The ups & downs & over & outs... the friends and "lovers & other strangers..."

"Goodbye to all that..."

I'll stick around for as long as I can.

And in the end? There will be only silence.

Well, besides the garage roof that's needed replacing for 10 years & the flat roof in the back of the house ( "You need a new roof..." "We can't afford one..." "I'll patch it best I can..." ) that tree that is springing the water line has a dead top in it, so I have to keep The Kid clear of that area when the wind blows.

Naturally that is the one place in the yard he won't stay clear of...
