Destruction of long-gun registry records halted at eleventh hour by Quebec court

Postmedia News Apr 5, 2012 – 2:06 PM ET | Last Updated: Apr 5, 2012 2:08 PM ET
The destruction of records from the now defunct long-gun registry has been halted at the eleventh hour by an injunction from a Quebec court.

Judge Jean-Francois de Grandpre of Quebec Superior Court granted a request by the Quebec government for an injunction to stop Ottawa from trashing the gun-registry records Thursday afternoon.

As a result, Ottawa has been forbidden to destroy documents in the registry. The decision, by means of a temporary injunction, was announced shortly after midday.

The bill to kill the registry passed its final vote in the Senate Wednesday evening by a vote of 50 to 27. The passing of Bill C-19, the Act to Amend the Criminal Code and the Firearms Act, was meant to mark the end of a long political battle over one of the most divisive law enforcement measures in recent memory...................http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/04/05 ... bec-court/

If the courts ultimately rule that the feds have to hand over the records, we have to remember to bill the Quebec government for the original cost of collecting the information.

A Paybec court is using the laws of a country whose Constitution they themselves haven't signed? This pretend country is lost.

I wish the conservatives would grow a pair, and just go ahead and destroy the records. They could say after their destruction that they were mistakenly destroyed, and they regret the accidental destruction, and just move on. It is always better, and easier to do what it is you want to do, then just apologize later.

There is no doubt this will get appealled, and Paybec will win. All Harper has to do is agree to hand over the info....and keep their federal welfare cheque for a couple years as payment.

Unless the federal government WANTS an excuse to keep this information. I mean, really, they get the political points from killing the registry, but they get to keep all of the information, and they can blame it on a Quebec Court. It's a win-win situation if you don't really care about privacy.

I believe you think a little like me, because that was my first thought, but chose to suppress it, and suggest the idea above. I am naturally critical of all government, and for the most part it has served me well.
