Where were opponents of Internet “spying” bill when Liberals tabled it?
tom.brodbeck - March 6th, 2012

What a difference six years makes when it comes to proposed Internet surveillance legislation in Canada. In 2005, then-Liberal federal public safety minister Anne McLellan introduced an Internet surveillance bill in Parliament that would allow police agencies, without a warrant, to obtain basic subscriber information from Internet service proviers during the course of a criminal investigation.

There were a few small stories about the bill at the time, including some concern about Internet privacy and “big brother” overseeing our Internet use. But that was it. There was no massive public backlash against the bill, nor was there vilification of McLellan for introducing the proposed legislation..................http://blogs.canoe.ca/raisinghell/gener ... tabled-it/

So, because people were asleep at the switch before, we should all snuggle down and go back to sleep now? I think not.

Fortunately even Edmonton-Centre came to it's senses in tossing Annie "Get your guns". She was replaced by Laurie Hawn a retired air force pilot and very principled conservative. He came close to unseating her in 2004 and went over the top putting her to the curb in 2006.

Born on Mother’s Day, 1947 and raised in Winnipeg, Laurie joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1964 and received his pilot wings in 1967. In over thirty years in the Air Force, Laurie rose to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and served an additional five years as Honourary Colonel of 417 Combat Support Squadron. Laurie held many senior staff positions, commanded a CF-18 Tactical Fighter Squadron and was the Wing Operations Officer at 4 Wing Cold Lake, overseeing the operation of six squadrons, 1,800 personnel, multi-million dollar budgets, and multi-billion dollar assets. He has served in Europe, the United States and throughout Canada.

IIRC it WAS on slashdot, but of little interest to anyone not in IT at the time.

People are a little wiser to tech issues now than they were in '05.

Very true and it wouldn't surprise me if there were a third more people online now in the country now than seven years ago, which would be a few million more. That would thus represent a few million more in touch with the technology and how it affects their lives and can intrude into it, ie: their kids on Facebook and other social sites for example.

Twos whined that his brainfart was in fact introduced by Ann "Screech Owl" McClelland that that that Marlene Jennings had introduced a similar bill.

The fact that McClelland and Jennings supported a dumbass idea does not make it more attractive IMO.

Go back to sleep Tommy. You missed the point this time.

As for Twos, he has chosen to be the punching bag for his Masters. So be it.

We have been lucky so far.

The Martin governemnt fell in late 2005 killing the bill. The CPC braintrust apparantly thought it more important to have an election than hold have to pass this oh so important legislation. I would have supported them in that choice.

It was coming up again under the CPC in 2008 but Mr. Harper apparantly thought it more important to get a majority. We know what happned there. I seem to recall a few people posting about it here at the time but I could be wrong.

In 2010, another attempt was made to introduce the same gawdawful bill but Mr. Harper prorogued Parliament ending the session so the bill died. I guess it was not so important to get it done then either.

But suddenly now it has to be done NOW. The Children Are In Peril. The title of the thing was changed at after it had been introduced to show how it was all about The Children. All those Perverts, Friends Of Perverts, People Who Might Become Perverts, People Who Could Be Said To Be Perverts. They must be found out and if there is no evidence, it can be planted. Omellettes can only be made if eggs are broken. Assets need to be seized as assorted Police Officials have their eyes on certain things such as cottages in Haliburton or ski lodges in Whistler that they might not otherwise be able to afford. There are also personal scores to settle and this bill will make it so much easier. All those dud copps from Reform days will finally be able to make their enemies pay. And of course it does not apply to Twos and his pals.

"Pass This Bill Now!" Where have I heard that before?
