Steyn on CFL lightbulbs

Examining the use of 'environmentalism' as a means to power.

Bought "one" of those 14 watt curly florescent screw-in light fixtures because it was on sale cheap. Knew long time ago that florescent lighting gave me headaches but thought I'd try it over my head through a frosted chandelier to see the keyboard since I was looking at the computer screen most of the time. Thought maybe it wouldn't bother me. No such luck.

What I really could use is one of those 7 watt incandescent "night light" bulbs fitted to the underside of my desk shining onto the keyboard.

The best light I have found around the computer is one of those bankers lamps and stocked up on enough incandescent bulbs that I'll never have to worry about them being discontinued. Because I have low vision and have difficulty with light I'll be danged if I'm going to risk what vision I have left on some chemical laden eco thing. :ohwell: Although when you think about it how can it be eco when it's full of chemicals. #-o

Sears Canada to stop selling incandescent bulbs
*

Courtney Greenberg May 26, 2011 – 3:45 PM ET

Old-school lightbulbs are soon to be no more at Sears Canada. The company has announced that they will stop selling incandescent and halogen lighting, phasing out the bulbs completely from stores by September 2011. (An official statement will be revealed on June 5 — UN World Environment Day.)

LED and CFL bulbs use up to 75% less energy than incandescents, the company says, and last up to 10 times longer.

Sears Canada also plans to make changes to the lighting in their stores, completing a switch to LED lighting by the end of August 2011. Sears anticipates the company will save $16-million annually in electricity costs; the company’s light bulb supplier, Sylvania, is making sure that all the old or unsold bulbs are recycled.

Well, there's that, but just think of the money you save on your power bill...

Suburban drips taking tinker bell to dance class in Escalades yapping about the light bulbs others might buy. Gee whiz. With these disposable human showpieces it's no wonder people like Al Gore are global heros.

To somewhat Bowdlerize what Glenn Reynolds keeps saying at Instapundit?

I'll believe there's an eco/enviro/climate crisis when the people braying about it start acting like it's real.

And actually change the way they live, instead of telling and trying to mandate how everyone else except them lives.

That, and taking my "choice" away- funny how that applies to some things and not others...

I actually like the CFL's well enough, and they have made a substantial difference in the power bills here.

But one thing I've found in a vasty, drafty old house like this is that if you leave a 60 Watt, incandescent bulb burning in the hallways, it chases the worst of the damp & cold off in the winter- kind of like a DampChasR does in a piano. The CFL's don't do that- they don't get hot enough.

I want my choice back.

Everyone is missing the salient point here. The USA is no longer capable of making any light bulbs whatsoever! Their ability to produce has been eliminated. China is the sole source for all cfl's.

THAT is what is important here.

An old prairie farm adage is that a light bulb in a dog house will prevent the water bowl from EVER freezing in the worst of winter conditions. I've been told this all my life by a hundred people. Perhaps someone here can verify this once and for all.

It's also how the new chicks stay warm in the barn in a small operation.

We noticed the winter we changed to the new fangled bulbs that the furnace came on more often. Gee I wonder why

House Fails to Pass BULB Act
On Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives failed to pass the Better Use of Light Bulbs (BULB) Act. Though the vote was 233-193, which normally would have been enough, the measure required a two-thirds majority for passage. While House Republicans may still try to adopt the measure by simple majority, most expect that it will not pass the Democrat-controlled Senate. The BULB Act would repeal Subtitle B of Title III of the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, which ultimately bans incandescent light bulbs.........http://www.thenewamerican.com/usnews/po ... s-bulb-act
