Steyn on CFL lightbulbs

Postby shiva » 01/ 01/ 11 1:54 am

 Too funny!

From the Right Scoop: Steyn had a little fun today explaining the Government of Maine’s instructions on what to do if you break one of the new CFL lightbulbs in your house. Through all of this he’s making the larger point that none of this bureaucratic nonsense is necessary if you use a normal incandescent light bulb, which of course they are trying to ban.

It’s a great listen. Enjoy!

It's not hard to envision that in a few years the loony left will make it illegal to clean up one of these broken light bulbs by yourself, but rather require that you call in a Hazardous Material Team to clean it up. At a cost that would likely pay your power bill for six months.

I heard on the radio yesterday that as of the first of the year it is legal to sell an incandescent light bulb in BC, but I have not seen anything about it in print.

While Mama was in Alabama, evil wights came in and changed all her bulbs to the curly things -- but what made her really angry is THEY TOOK HER INCANDESCENT BULBS, which she liked and had paid for.

I am stocking up whenever I see any in the shops. Those new things hurt my eyes.

There are entire segments on talk radio dedicated to headaches and nausea caused by the new bulbs.

If the comment concerning BC above is correct it won't matter. Nobody on the lower mainland shops in Canada. They'll just pick up the bulbs they want when they're in Blaine or Bellingham, Washington for gas and groceries anyway.

There's an ongoing price comparison on a travel site I frequent. A guy in Fort Erie, Ontario is asked to pay $1.10 a liter or $4.18 a US gallon. He fuels in Buffalo at $3.119 for regular so more than a dollar a gallon cheaper. Dallas, Texas was $2.66 US gallon yesterday.

I do a fair amount of .... experimental cooking  ... and I found this summer that while in the States everything I would consider a staple: milk, butter, flour, etc, was much less expensive.

Our dollar was basically on par, and just a few quick calculations while wandering the odd grocery store showed that a typical family of four would save a huge amount on their grocery bills monthly.

Now, I'm not sure what type of income farmers make in the States, but I didn't notice a huge difference in the type of machinery purchased or houses or vehicles while passing through the countryside.

You can buy gas in Blaine Washington for 3.35 a gal. Which would be around 81 cents a litre. In Vancouver it's almost $1.18 a litre. Blaine is just across the border, and in Blaine they will take Canadian money at par. They did when I lived near there is the early seventies.

A great many places always took CDN at par - Great Falls, Montana, Kalispell on Canadian long weekends, etc. The Town Pump in Shelby served up .50¢ cold draught and took Canadian money when it was in the .85¢ exchange range and when a glass of beer would be $3.75 in Lethbridge. Why shop in Canada?

German "heatball" wheeze outwits EU light bulb ban

BERLIN | Fri Oct 15, 2010 11:51am EDT

BERLIN (Reuters) - A German entrepreneur is bypassing a European Union ban on light bulbs of more than 60 watts by marketing his own brand as mini heaters.

Siegfried Rotthaeuser and his brother-in-law have come up with a legal way of importing and distributing 75 and 100 watt light bulbs -- by producing them in China, importing them as "small heating devices" and selling them as "heatballs."

To improve energy efficiency, the EU has banned the sale of bulbs of over 60 watts -- to the annoyance of the mechanical engineer from the western city of Essen. keep reading

Yeah I guess most border states will take Canadian money, and at par if it's near enough to the border. The two currencies are at par right now. Unless you live near the border it wouldn't be worth traveling for cheaper gas. When I lived in Surrey BC you could be across the border and in Blaine in about 15 or 20 minutes if the crossing wasn't busy.

My former brother in law, the Vancouver cop lived in Delta and was in Blaine as many as three times in one day. He would run for more beer at half time watching football. They buy nothing in Canada.

Glen Beck has a pretty funny segment on this posted on YouTube.

That's always my first impression. The CFL bulbs at Commonwealth light the field very nicely for night Eskimos games. Why tamper with what works?
