You are absolutely right, someone with another job offer and money in the bank can walk anytime, but of course we know this ir rarely the case.

This is why we need some sort of regulation that covers temping and how long companies can keep one person at temp status.

Companies absolutely should have the right to hire people on a temp basis to see if they are a good fit with the company
and companies should absolutely have the right to hire temps during busy periods like Christmas when they need people short term.
but
Temping as a permanant status for an employee is just a way of skirting around benefits and fair pay.

In reality we all know that, and how you view the issue comes down to whether you are a worker who needs fair employment laws or an owner / shareholder whose sole interest is in the profits from a company.

Just what business needs in this country--more rules.

Just as you predicted this story is going no where. Where is the media and why are they so busy recounting the nose hair of Brian Mulroney. [-(

Business in this country needs to strike a good balance between profit for the company and being fair to employees.

What we don't need is a situation where we truly become like a third world country, where workers are kept at minimum wage in the name of profit and where poverty becomes increasingly normal.

I know people who have worked as temps at one place for almost two years.
Great deal for the company, but the worker sure gets a bad deal.

Should there be a time limit as to how long a company can keep a worker at temp status without benefits ?

Why? Often the temp companies have their own benefits.

When I was temping a number of years ago I was hardly making minimum wage-and when my BIL stopped temping to go permanent part time he actually had to take a pay cut--albeit a small one.

What about being fair to employers?

Sometimes you don't know what the commitment is. Temping is not a good way to build a loyal workforce. Temps are usually that-- temps. If they aren't paid right or treated right, they can leave, too. Nothing stopping them from trying to find a better job.

You are quite right about that, and the biggest benefit is to the temp agency who takes a portion of the money from each temp job.

If they aren't paid right or treated right, they can leave, too. Nothing stopping them from trying to find a better job.

Usually lack of money (savings that will carry them along during the job seeking process) stops them and the employers as well as the temp agencies know this.

The phrase "if they don't like it they can leave and go somewhere else" is one we have all used, but in reality, we know why most temp workers don't.
The temp system is not set up for people to get ahead in the job force, much like credit card companies are not set up to benefit the people using the cards.
We would all be much better off if we had enough money in the bank, that we didn't have to use credit cards at all and if we had enough money in the bank so that we could take our time to look for the right job.
Thats not real life for most of us and we all know it.

I certainly want a climate in Canada in which business can thrive and one in which our economy can stay strong, but at the expense of creating millions of working poor, no, there just has to be fair balance somewhere.

If you are a good temp worker and you call the temp agency looking for alternative employment they will most likely have you in a new job even before your existing contract ends. The agencies know who the good performers are, and who at the end of the day is paying their salaries.

Also, some people like the temp lifestyle as it affords them the luxury of movement and short term commitments.

Several years ago I needed a job and the first place I went was to a temp agency. They got me into a job with the TD Bank and after a few months the bank hired me on full-time. I ended up staying there another year but I could have stayed on and made a career out of it if I wanted to.

I think that is not uncommon; a company hires a bunch of temps and then they hire on the ones they like.

My other experience with a temp agency was when I needed a summer job in between my articles and bar course. At that point I was in my 30s and had two university degrees, so I really wasn't looking for the same type jobs that students were. I ended up shuffling paper at the Crown Attorney's office in downtown Toronto. It wasn't an amazing job but it was there when I needed it and sort of related to my training.

I hear complaints from young people all the time about how they cannot get what they want because employers want experience. Temp agencies is where you can get it. It appears that's what you did......gained experience for a resume.

The situation underlying their complaint is inveitable when you're in a crowded field.

Personally, I won't be able to settle down until I'm around 32.

Tempting is how some of the smarter heads of Crown Corps and government departments get around the ridiculous criteria needed to hire someone fulltime. With a temp, they can hire the person with the best qualifications for the job instead of having to figure out who is a CCC or PPP in French first, then looking at qualifications.

On the flip side it also helps with nepotism because the boss can tell their friend/family member which agency they have a contract with and to put in their résumé. It astounded me the number of temps working in the Government who knew half the staff on day one. There are drawbacks, but I do believe the good outweighs the bad when it comes to temp hirings.

The government should use more temps, it is more cost effective for the tax payer. Screw people who want full time jobs, they are socialist parasites. ...... right?

The civil service is already paid far more than their private sector counterparts. We need to roll back both their wages and their benefits to reflect a modicum of reality.
