VANCOUVER - Call it a safe erection site.

B.C. sex trade workers are exploring the possibility of opening what would be Canada's first co-op brothel owned and operated by prostitutes as a way of escaping the dangers of Vancouver streets.

The co-op could offer women a safe place to work, health and safety training, and "a place to be a community," according to one of the authors of the report endorsing the idea.

"It's so dangerous to work in the streets, women are saying they'll do anything to work indoors and some women are being extorted," said sex trade worker Sue Davis.

"The co-op is seen as a way we could self-direct what we need right now," she said. "We need a safe work site. We need a safe organizing space. A place to be a community. Health and safety training for workers entering the trade. That's the most dangerous time, because you don't know how to work safely."

Davis said a sex trade co-op could offer different levels of membership.

"Some people could buy in. Maybe you don't want to be a long-term member, but the rooms are still available. Members could vote to buy a hot tub. They could set up scholarships for the children of killed sex trade workers. You could have people working on the computer doing administrative duties.

"We talked about having quickie rooms. Then nice rooms. Maybe a VIP room. Maybe a dungeon," she mused. "I think this could be positive for the sex worker community and the greater community."

Notice how the media has changed the word "whore" into "sex trade worker"?

It's like how they changed the phrase "illegal immigrant" into "undocumented worker".

Words matter, and yes, folks, there is an agenda with the MSM.

If you want to stay ahead of the curve, and appear hip and enlightened among your liberal friends, I'd suggest calling them "Undocumented Americans" for now on. And of course "Undocumented Canadians", if referring to the illegals here who are never talked about.

It sounds to me like these gals are considering setting up a business.
I'm sorry, I must have missed something. Have we legalized prostitution in Canada?

Are the perameters for operating a sex co-op outlined by the BC government? What's the required square footage? Is it decided on a per "John" basis?

If it's considered a "trade" will the schools now be promoting this as an option on career day? Also, since most trades are taught thru apprenticeships - inexperienced student working with an experienced tradesman - how are we going to determine which "sex trade workers" are performing at a "journeyman" level?

One more thing - Have we lost our minds? :chair:

Well if the co-op is between private sex workers I don't care. If it's between them and my tax dollars, then I oppose it.

Maybe Bill Whatcott can promote this idea as mayor of Edmoton... as long as it is only heterosexual in nature of course.

Damn, I was hoping this would be the announcement of something more like Mountain Equipment Coop, but for sex. A brothel run not by pimps or whores, but by johns.

Assuming it is a good policy that will magically work (it probably won't, but that is another debate), I am guessing that the costs of the coop will be minimal, and will save us some of the other costs of prostitution, namely: the spread of STD's, high levels of drug abuse among prostitutes, and physically abused women. Those are real, medical costs that are non-trivial.

Personally I prefer a middle path between legitimizing prostitution as a trade, and treating prostitutes as criminals. Public policy should treat prostitutes as victims (and often they are - even if it is a path they chose, they are stuck their because of various dependencies and possessive pimps). The reduction of prostitution should be a public policy goal, alongside the reduction of the harms associated with prostitution (harms that are exacerbated when prostitution takes place within the context of an illegal trade).

Prostitution is legal in Canada.

Firemen are now referred to as firefighters.
Postmen as letter carriers.

Although one who farms being called a farmer sounds fine, calling one who fishes a fisher still sounds odd.

Language changes. "They" is now often used as a singular pronoun. And we might as well do away with the apostrophe. There's now about a dozen people left in the world who use it properly. In this forum, it is mis-used 90% of the time.
