Majority of Canadians not interested in reducing or eliminating CBC funding

OTTAWA - The Conservative government's promise to keep the CBC's funding stable appears to be in tune with public opinion.

A Harris-Decima survey conducted for The Canadian Press suggests 46 per cent of Canadians would like the CBC's funding to stay at the current level and 23 per cent would like it to be increased.

Twenty-two per cent say funding should be cut, while 12 per cent say it should be eliminated altogether.

The future of the CBC has been a subject of debate in federal politics this fall, with the Crown corporation under parliamentary scrutiny for its approach to access to information.

The National Citizens Coalition and a some Conservative MPs have started petitions to have the CBC's funding cut, while the Liberal Party has its own petition to have it protected.

The telephone poll of 1,000 Canadians was conducted between Oct. 27-31 and it has a margin of error of 3.1 per cent, 19 times out of 20.

I find it difficult to believe this poll. Everyone I have spoken with over the past year are furious that the CBC is getting $1.1+ billion every year. No one has said they were happy with it.

The best defence is a good offence and the CBC is as offensive as they come. :P

The only "poll" that matters is their nielsen ratings and they demonstrate without any shadow of a doubt that the complete opposite is the case.

So, the survey didn't have an "I don't care" option?

That poll is unadulterated bullshit. I have taken too many polls to count and I know very well that polls can easily be designed to get the desired outcome.

Before Sun News started to tell the truth to the public about the CBC the majority of Canadians continued to believe the paradigm the CBC has been selling for decades. Perhaps, ... perhaps it was once true, but even allowing that it was, the CBC has been a blight on taxpayers, programing and news for decades.

An informed public would not support Harper's nonsense.

Obviously seems to depend on who is doing the polling.

Abacus asked 1,003 Canadians to give their views about the best way to finance the CBC. Fifty-three per cent of Canadians said it should continue as a non-profit organization - it should sell ads if it can, and make the rest up through contributions from viewers. That's similar to the PBS model in the United States, a public broadcaster that has regular telethons where people who like their brand of programming (and politics) can prove it by cutting a cheque.

It's sensible - which is why 53% of Canadians want it

A sizeable minority of Canadians don't even want the non-profit model - 39% of Canadians want to privatize the CBC altogether, as opposed to keeping it as a Crown corporation.

3 problems-

1. Media outlets all over the country "reported" this press release word for word.

2. Who commissioned the poll?

3. What was the question posed? (Did the people know the CBC gets 1.1 billion? Most don't)

It's like the polls on abortion laws where it was revealed that as many as 90% of those polled didn't know that we don't have any laws against it. The flip side was a series of polls in the USA indicated that a large number of people were in favour of reducing foreign aid, but most over estimated how much was being spent on foreign aid, sometime by a fact of 100.

Somehow I expect that you would get a slew of different answers depending on whether you tell people that it costs over a $1 billion a year, or broke down the cost per person, per tax filer, per tax payer, or by taxpayer relative to their earnings, or even based on how much per year each person was willing to pay to keep the same level of fundind.

This poll strikes me as being useless.
