On September 29, to October 1, 2006, there was a large political meeting in Calgary called the Calgary Congress. During the meeting, Dr. Leon Craig, a political science professor at the University of Alberta, gave a speech in which he set out the case for Alberta becoming independent from Canada.

The case for an independent Alberta was made by PET and Peter Lougheed signing the NEP. The problem was the quality of Albertans to freeing themselves was not equal to the task.
