Environmentalists question latest wildfires

Some environmentalists are casting a suspicious eye on two fast-growing blazes in Central Oregon.


President Bush had planned to visit the Deschutes National Forest to talk about forest policy.


Now, the Oregon Wildlife Federation said, the Booth and Bear Butte fires may be underscoring his argument for increased logging and thinning.

Federation spokesman Joe Keating said it's strange that the fires started two weeks after lightning hit the area.


It's unlikely for a fire to smolder that long.


The Forest Service is investigating the cause of the fires. Keating has asked the FBI for an independent investigation of the fires.


Carl Pope said his group, the Sierra Club, isn't ready to suggest a Bush connection to the fires. Jumping to conclusions won't help anyone, Pope said.

A side note: last night I was watching Hannity and Colmes, I rarely watch tv except for Fox News in the very early AM prior to leaving for work. There was a political analyst on about the upcoming California election. Sean asked him something about Arnold or Bustamante and this guy just went off, his face turned red, his eyes started bulging and he started going on about how Al Gore won the election and ....... well.......... you know the rest. I swear I just burst out laughing. People like him are going to find themselves in the nut house if they don't get over it.

He originally was scheduled to tour part of the Deschutes forest near Redmond to talk about his plan to curb forest fires. But a pair of fires broke out in those woods just days earlier and forced Bush to alter his plans. He took the helicopter tour instead.

Bush also missed out on a briefing by a local forestry activist who had to skip the presidential meeting because the activist's home was threatened by the spreading fire.

Am I the ONLY one who sees the HILARITY in this set of remarks...???
