Campus St. Jean (Edmonton) cuts 12 jobs

Campus St. Jean, the French language faculty of the University of Alberta, has laid off 12 people in attempt to cut its operating deficit.

"The last option considered is always to lay off people," the dean, Marc Arnal, said in a news release on Wednesday.

"However, after taking all other available steps — including not filling three open vacancies, limiting travel and hosting opportunities, discontinuing some IT initiatives and transfers to institutes, and curtailing academic activities where interest is waning — we had no choice but to take the unavoidable step of letting people go."

The individuals who lost their jobs are staff and contract academic staff.

In other words, stretching campus funding means cutting back on forced French at a school in a city in a province who don't want it. Excellent news. Why not shut down the faculty altogether?
