More Earthquakes Rattle Yellowstone

The Denver Post
A 3.5-magnitude earthquake hit Yellowstone National Park on Tuesday afternoon as a swarm of earthquakes that started Sunday intensified.
The earthquake occurred at 2:32 p.m., according to scientists.
A woman at the West Yellowstone Montana Chamber of Commerce said the earthquake created a "rumble like a truck driving down the road."
Al Nash, spokesman for Yellowstone National Park, said that 469 earthquakes since Sunday had been recorded as of 3 p.m. Tuesday.
So far, scientists monitoring the swarm say the tremors seem to be normal tectonic activity. However, they continue to keep an eye on the situation.

Yellowstone Rumblings: Nothing to Fear?

The Yellowstone caldera was created by an enormous super-volcanic explosion 640,000 years ago. Ever since, the area has been the the site of earthquake activity. Indeed, a map of the historic seismicity of the region over the last 20 years shows swarms of dots much like so many busy bees.
On Monday, a swarm of nearly 500 earthquakes on the western edge of Yellowstone National Park began. Though they increased in frequency and intensity Tuesday, experts who monitor the area say they did not warrant emergency measures. A little over one year ago, there was some concern over a series of quakes centered around the north shore of Yellowstone Lake, which overlays some of the ancient, yet still simmering, Yellowstone Caldera. The recent earthquake swarms at Yellowstone's "Super Volcano" are the longest spate of these swarms to hit Yellowstone in recent memory. The USGS is downplaying these earthquake swarms as "normal," and it's possible they are. The truth is that our knowledge of Super Volcanoes is extremely limited; there has not been an eruption of a Super Volcano in recorded history, and as dangerous as this phenomena is (Super Volcanoes), there is no established scientific record that scientists can use to properly evaluate whether or not an eruption is eminent. <a href=http://www.opednews.com/populum/diarypage.php?did=15762>continued</a>
