To give someone a full-time, minimum wage job, costs 2000 hours x $10.25 = $20,500
Plus CPP contribution of $841.50
Plus EI contribution of $525.21
Plus vacation pay of $871.59 including EI+CPP

So that is $22,783.30 and that doesn't include the cost of providing them a workspace and equipment, nor the cost of administration and the general headache of managing the personnel.

Speaking as "the guy who used to hire 'em or fire 'em?

Every new law- every new regulation- every new tax or fee is a disincentive to hire more people.

You have a skill? A degree?

Great- do you want a job? I have to ask myself "what is that going to cost me?"

The actual money is negotiable... that, we can work out.

What I always asked myself was "what are the hidden costs?"

The more you involve government in hiring or firing? The more hidden costs there are.

That is why most of the jobs are elsewhere.

What you're saying is making a lot of sense and it's written in plain, simple words anyone could understand.

Ever tought about running for office? :) :)

I thank you for the kindly words but I am much too plain-spoken to run for office-

My natural inclination for addressing crowds is

"If you Sons of Bitches are dumb enough to listen to me you'll get what you deserve- good & hard..."

 I'm afraid such an approach would be a taddd too direct, indeed.

Still, I think you give yourself too little credit. People like straightshooters who adress them in clear, simple language.

I generally add 10 - 20% on to the wage for financial analysis purposes, depending on the benefits package being offered. Down here you are at a minimum of 7.62% for FICA, .8% for FUTA and a varying % for SUTA and WC depending on the state and the experience rate. Add to that any paid leave and pension plan per the employment agreement.
"The only freedom which deserves the name is that of pursuing our own good in our own way, so long as we do not attempt to deprive others of theirs, or impede their efforts to obtain it. Each is the proper guardian of his own health, whether bodily, or mental or spiritual. Mankind are greater gainers by suffering each other to live as seems good to themselves, than by compelling each to live as seems good to the rest." ~ John Stuart Mill
