I hope that Mama will live long enough not to ever have to use the Monster Bulbs. I am still stocking up, as the CFL bulbs hurt my eyes and make it difficult for me to do my worki.

CFL Fluorescent Light Bulbs: More Hype Than Value

by Paul Wheaton
RichSoil.com

Recently by Paul Wheaton: Organic Lawn Care for the Cheap and Lazy

I used to like fluorescent lights and then I changed my mind.

As the years passed, I found more and more folks like me, and more and more reasons to be uncomfortable with fluorescent lights. When some people see that I don't use them, they try to tell me about how great they are. When I try to explain why I prefer incandescent, I nearly always get a dismissive wave – signaling that I am clearly a fool and whatever tripe I am about to utter is clearly not worth their time. This article represents a glimpse into that tripe.

If you leave all of the lightbulbs in your house on 24/7, then replacing all of the incandescent light bulbs in your house with CFL light bulbs will save you money. For people that typically leave lights off when not in use, it turns out that incandescent light is cheaper than fluorescent light – the exact opposite of what we have been told all these years. .....................http://lewrockwell.com/orig13/wheaton2.1.1.html

Would you buy a $60 LED bulb?

How much would you pay for an amazing, state-of-the-art light bulb? Shoppers will be asking themselves that very question at Home Depot and other outlets starting Sunday – Earth Day – when the bulb that won a $10-million U.S. government contest goes on sale.

The bulb is the most energy-efficient yet, lasts about 20 years and is supposed to give off a pleasing, natural-looking light. But what separates it from the pack most is the price tag: $60.

That's the price that reflects the cost of the components, especially the top-notch chips, or diodes, that give off the light, and that's the price commercial customers will pay. But the manufacturer, the Netherlands-based Philips, is discounting it right away to $50 for U.S. consumers, and working on deals with electric utilities to discount it even further, by as much as $20 to $30.

This means the bulb will cost anywhere from $20 to $60, depending on where it's found. Online, consumers will be paying $50 for each bulb, because utilities don't subsidize online sales.

The U.S. Congress launched the L Prize contest in 2007, with the goal of creating a bulb to replace the standard, energy-wasting “incandescent” 60-watt bulb. The requirements were rigorous, and Philips was the only entrant. Its bulb was declared the winner last year, after a year and a half of testing. The contest stipulated that the winning bulb be sold for $22 in its first year on the market........................http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/tec ... le2404932/

I am in the middle of a remodel and chose to use LED downlights in one of the rooms. They are pricey, at $49 per, but the light quality is superb and the energy consumption very low at 9.5 watts and most importantly they produce almost no heat and last forever.

I got a newsletter from my furnace company today and in it there is tidbit that gives me the creeps but is interesting none the less. It states.....

Facebood will be the host for an upcoming app that will basically let you compete with your friends over who uses less energy. Designed by OPower and the Natural Resources Defense Council, it isn't available quite yet, but you can sign up for an alert at http://socialopower.com.

Creepy isn't it.

Meh, I don't like it when the govt has access to my power records, but I would have no problem sharing that info with friends.

Let's face it; even absent of this the govt is watching everything you do. All in the name of keeping you from having a little plant matter to consume.

Neither is sharing power records with your friends but I don't mind. I was just responding to your "creepy" comment, which you asked my opinion of. Creepy is the govt watching you (because they're afraid you might have something they don't want you to have), not sharing info voluntarily with friends.

OK you're allowed to do that ;)

But seriously, LEDs are the way of the future. The light quality rivals incandescent bulbs, and that is something I could never stand about the CFLs - the light they gave off was total crap.

I've slowly been replacing all my emergency lighting (flashlights etc.) with LED because the light is so superior.

Hoarders stash away as governments call for lights out for incandescent bulbs

The end is near. The lights are dimming.

So some are preparing themselves and stockpiling reserves now.

While 2012 was headlined to be the year of humanity's demise, the days of one comforting companion are definitely numbered.

Which explains why some are hoarding the old fashioned incandescent light bulb.

Around the world, there are those fighting the dying of the light as many countries outlaw old filament lights for the sake of energy efficient alternatives, including compact fluorescent bulbs (CFL), halogens and LEDs.

While not a ban - many jurisdictions are just setting energy-efficient benchmarks - our old-fashioned guardians who saved us from the bogeyman and interrupted our first kiss by the front door -- the universal symbol of a great idea -- are becoming unwelcome..................http://www.ottawasun.com/2012/10/04/hoa ... cent-bulbs

I have a huge stash of incandescent bulbs and add to it every trip I make to the USA. Anyone have any idea how many bulbs the maximum allowable good importation value from the USA purchases. :D
