Ten tips for would-be letter writers
Paul Russell, National Post

Is one of your New Year's resolutions to have a letter to the editor published in a national newspaper? As luck would have it, the Post is looking for new letter writers. Here are some tips from our letters editor to ensure that your correspondence will be noticed

- Keep it short The best letters are direct, punchy and don't allow the attention of readers to waver. Unlike columns -- which introduce a topic, support it with facts and then come to a conclusion -- letters should make their point quickly, with no tangents or long elaborations.

To use a sports analogy, people reading a letters page should feel like they are watching a jousting match, with each submission making a few quick hits then backing off so the next letter can hit readers with more intellectual thrusts and jabs. - Size matters To allow for as many viewpoints as possible each day, letters are limited to 200 words. If you can't make your point in that space, rewrite. Your chances of being published are inversely proportional to the size of your letter.

- Be topical In this Internet-era, print newspapers are already a day behind, so be sure to write about issues currently in the news. O. J. Simpson, Stephane Dion and Ashley Dupre (remember her?) are so 2008. And please stop sending letters about the income trust betrayal -- that was so 2007.

- Appeal to readers' emotions Some of our best letters come from people in the midst of difficult situations.

This year, for example, we carried a letter from a woman whose profoundly deaf nephew was shanked in a penitentiary cafeteria; another from a woman who described how

If you have a personal insight into something in the news, we want you to share it

she found the ability to forgive her brother's killer; a third from a man who "lost my money in the stock market, and now I'll probably lose my job and my house." If a letter pulls on the heartstrings, it will be noticed.

- Logic also has its place Factual, dry news stories that you disagree with are best countered by factual, stimulating letters. Thoughtful (but short) countervailing arguments can often be very interesting.

- Write about what you have experienced We could fill the page each day with scholarly essays from university professors and assorted academics, but we'd rather hear from everyday Canadians about the issues they are facing. If you have a personal insight into something in the news, share it.

- You might not hear from us We receive close to 100 submissions each day. However, since the average Letters page only holds 15 to 20 notes from readers, we have to be selective -- ruthlessly selective, it sometimes seems. However, if your letter makes the shortlist, you will be notified.

- Your letter will be edited Submissions that come with preambles like, "Letter must run in full or not at all," leave us no choice but to select the second option. Post staff edit for clarity, style and space. It's how we justify our paycheques, and we like to think our efforts result in a better product.

- Know the two-week rule To allow for the input of as many readers as possible, we try to space out letter writers by at least a fortnight. That rule frustrates some regular contributors; others just think of it as a time to rest their creative energies.

- Things to include When you write to us, make sure to provide your name, phone number and address. And no, we will not publish letters with your name withheld, except in extraordinary circumstances that must to be arranged beforehand with our editorial staff.

Also, remember that we need exclusivity. If you send your letter to other publications, we'll not only be hurt -- we'll reach for the delete key. Don't make us go there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_Ser ... stribution

As of September, 2006, there were approximately 454,000 members of the Canadian civil service,[6] divided as follows:

* Core public administration: 180,000
* Canadian Forces and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP): 106,000
* Federal business enterprises (including crown corporations): 88,000
* Separate agencies: 60,000
* Other (e.g., Senate and the Canadian House of Commons): 20,000

There are approximately 100 distinctly different positions in the Canadian public service; most work in policy, operations or administrative functions. About 15% are scientists and professionals, 10% work in technical operations and 2.5% are executives.[7]

About 42% of Canadian public servants work in the National Capital Region (NCR) (Ottawa-Hull), 24% work elsewhere in Ontario or Quebec, 21% in Western Canada, and 11% in Atlantic Canada. Since the headquarters of most agencies are located in the NCR, about 72% of executives work in this area.[7]

Canadian civil servants are also located in more than 180 countries and provide service in 1,600 locations in Canada.

Some interesting facts that you probably didn't know about Health Canada that you really must read.

Half way through it I started asking myself what has any of this got to do with health?

FAA, schedules I and IV Indeterminates 172,800

What exactly is Indeterminates? Contract employees maybe? But isn't that what term employees are?

186,754 + 172,800 = 359,554

Approximately one gov employee for every 92 Canadians, not including seasonal, term, politicians, their staff, ministries, councils...etc ...etc

Isn't it great that it's also broken down into male female or if they are a gimp. :roll:

As a gimp I feel honoured to have my own column. Of course if we were actually equal we wouldn't need our own column so lets just call this the brownie point column. :roll:
