A challenge to my fellow FDers.

Our grocery store -- and my church -- do not collect food for the food bank except during their *drives* when they have people in the subway stations literally shrieking (usually six to ten people spread out along the platform) at the top of their voices at 7:30 in the morning. The DFB uses a bullying campaign that I intensely dislike; however, I do contribute what I can to the food drives, but not to the screaming idiots on the subway platform.

Our church does not appear to do any charitable collections for anything except St Vincent de Paul. I brought in some personal care items once and tried to give them to one of the CWL members and she was totally upset by the thought of taking charge of them.

Churches in the States collect food for an emergency pantry every Sunday.

I give to Yonge Street Mission when I can; however they are only open M-F, 9-5 and I have to work during those hours.

If anyone who lives in Toronto knows of a church or organization they trust who collects baby food and care items during non-office-hours, please tell me and I will be glad to participate.

Why would they? St. V de P, where it is strong, does pretty much everything. Go there for clothes or food or household goods, or if you're in trouble for money or housing or any need.

And this is the childrens fault how????

I didn't imply it was. Upon investigation there may be a case to remove the children from that home though. That was more my point.

Or maybe she was just buying chips and noodles. Holy crap.

My unfortunate point was that you had to see the people involved I was referring to. We see news stories about people being charged with "failing to provide the necessities of life". I would like to take these kids home and make them lunch sometimes.

And when the peaceniks want they're money back instead of it going to national defense? Sorry Charles, if there is one constant that pertains to the government, it's that everyone lands up paying for something they don't want to. If you wish to pay less tax, there are ways to do so -- pick one.

I guess if we can give $40 billion to the banks and wealthy investors to cover their ABCP and CDO losses I can buy a few cans of food for the food bank :)

Nothwithstanding the amount of tax paid, I'd rather it went to the latter than the former.

In the words of George Bailey of "It's a Wonderful Life":

"Just remember this, Mr. Potter, that this rabble you're talking about... they do most of the working and paying and living and dying in this community. Well, is it too much to have them work and pay and live and die in a couple of decent rooms and a bath? Anyway, my father didn't think so. People were human beings to him. But to you, a warped, frustrated old man, they're cattle."

We cannot blame the children for the problems of the parents and allow them to go hungry.

It's easy to say that some parents have made wrong choices but that's not the fault of the child yet it's the child that goes unfed.

Each and every time I go into the grocery store even if it's for just one item I first stop in the baby supply section and grab a jar a can or box of healthy baby food for the food bank collection box in every grocery store.

I would like to put the challenge out for others to join me in my mission to let no baby go hungry. Please join the effort and spread the word. Let's see if we can make a noticeable difference for the food bank shelves

I noticed today that the bin at my grocery store has a considerable amount of baby food in it. Looks like it's catching on :D

Been doing this for years. It's a good challenge. :P

Here in Sk health cards have to be presented for each member of the family using the Food Bank. Cheaters are usually caught and suspended. My buddy is the CEO but has tendered his resignation today :ohwell:

I'd like to relay something that occurred a wee bit ago that for some reason I just can't shake off. It's burned into my memory like a sore spot.

Hubby generally peruses the discount shelf in the grocery store of things they are blowing out the door at a much reduced price. On this day he found two cases of baby formula that normally sells for more than $40 a case on sale for $24.99 because it was a few weeks before the expiration date. I happen to have a gift card for $25. that someone had given me so we decided that we would use it to make the purchase and put it in the food donation box at the store. When I paid for it I stated that it was for the donation box and the clerk looked up and said and I kid you not....."That's awfully white of you". I said nothing mainly because I was stunned by it. When got to the car my hubby even asked more why I had not removed her spleen manually. It's been weeks since this happened and I am still flabberghasted by it. Interestingly I have not seen the same young lady since. I cannot stop thinking about it. :ohwell:

If pro-choice people believe that women shouldn't become mothers because they didn't meet some arbitrary bar of some posters here they should start a separate thread advocating unkindness rather than detracting from Styky's thread.

I was wondering when I'd see a classy, sensible post here. :hurray:

I think it's a wonderful idea Styky. I'll see what I can do on Wednesday to chip in what I can. The whole point of charity is to give and let the other stuff work out.

At the rate Ontario and Quebec is bleeding Alberta your province will soon have Food Banks to match ours.

I like the post where the person had relatives running the church food bank. The local church is probably the most effecient way to get food where it should be.

Ms Styke, I love your idea of buying baby food. I never thought of that. Great idea.
Don't forget- in November write in Ross Perot.
