My hubby is going to be really ticked off if he finds out that the weeds he's been killing all these years could have saved his life. :?

Ont. researchers probe use of dandelion root on cancer cells

By Beatrice Fantoni, Postmedia News February 19, 2012

WINDSOR, Ont. — Cancer researchers in Windsor hope to start clinical trials soon to find out if dandelion root extract can kill cancer cells in humans without harming healthy cells.

“We are very excited,” said Dr. Siyaram Pandey, a biochemist at the University of Windsor, describing the result of the tests in the lab that so far confirm that dandelion root extract causes cancer cells from leukemia blood samples to die off.

He and oncologist Dr. Caroline Hamm of Windsor Regional Hospital are submitting their application to Health Canada for approval of a Stage 1 clinical trial to determine just what dose of dandelion root extract is tolerable and effective in patients with an aggressive form of leukemia known as chronic myelomonocyctic leukemia (CMML) as well as other cancers, including pancreatic cancer and melanoma.

The research could one day lead to a cancer treatment that is non-toxic and not derived from synthetic chemicals.

“It triggers a very specific kind of suicide,” Pandey said of the process in which the dandelion root extract causes cancer cells to die.

“The fantastic observation was that it was very selective to cancers.”

In other words, the extract only targeted cancer cells and not healthy cells.

This is a contrast to current chemotherapy treatments, which are very toxic and damage normal cells in the process of killing cancerous ones.

Pandey said the same cell suicide result was observed when the dandelion root extract was applied to other types of cancers, including bone cancer, pancreatic cancer, colon cancer and neuroblastoma.

Research conducted in mice has shown no toxicity either, Pandey said, and it showed the dandelion root extract had no side effects.

The team’s latest findings were published Friday in the journal PLoS One.

Another paper is set to be published next month in the journal of the American Pancreatic Association.

Pandey and Hamm came to this research about three years ago after a handful of Hamm’s leukemia patients started drinking dandelion root tea as an alternative therapy when their chemotherapy stopped working.

A few of those patients went into remission for a few months and then relapsed, Hamm said, but she brought the subject up with Pandey, who has conducted similar research with Hawaiian spider lily plants.

One of Hamm’s patients has been in remission for three years, she said, after a steady intake of dandelion root tea.

She called the change “remarkable.”

“It’s not a home run,” Hamm said of the tea, but the results shown in the lab warrant a clinical trial.

Financial support for the research was scarce, at first because of skepticism. The Knights of Columbus started by making a grant in 2010. Over the years, this was followed by funding from the Seeds4Hope program and the family of Kevin Couvillon, a young man from Windsor who died of leukemia in 2010.

The Couvillon family recently made a second gift of $20,000 to support Pandey’s research.

“We are so grateful,” Pandey said of the generosity of the family, adding that the papers published on the topic have been dedicated to Kevin.

Pandey said all the funding for the research is local.

He and his team have patented a system to extract the compound from dandelion roots to make it as concentrated and powerful as possible.

Pandey said he hopes to meet with Health Canada in the next few months to discuss the potential for the clinical trial on humans.

“We’re early on,” Hamm said, adding that if Health Canada does approve the clinical trial, she expects it will go quickly because there will be a lot of interest.

Old friend, there is a theory I've heard for as many years as I've been alive that "for every ailment there is, there is a cure in nature- we just haven't discovered it yet..."

I actually think there is some merit to that- digitalis ( foxglove plant ) and tamoxiflin ( the Pacific Yew tree ) come to mind.

For whatever it is worth to you, it makes sense to me.

Thank heaven for Computer techs, I'm back. [-o<

I picked up a worm and it completely crashed and wiped out my hard drive. Many dollars later I'm back and this time with a better virus etc. protection program. :hurray:

It has been a very eventful week. Hubby went for his blood work and meeting with the cancer team this week and this is where we stand.....

Before they removed or killed off 50% of his liver his cancer markers reading was 54 and before he started his last round of chemo it was 30. As of today he has a normal count. :hurray: The plan is to reinstall his PIC line and send him through another hit of chemo whether that's 3 rounds or a full 12 is yet to be seen but the Docs last words to my honey were after the chemo (just to make sure it's gone) I don't expect to see you for another 15 years. Hallelujah, praise be, God has answered our prayers. We are fully aware that the next few months are not going to be a treat but we're both smiling so much that it doesn't much matter.

Thanks everyone for your support and the next time someone questions prayer relate to them our story. He was stage 4 colon cancer with liver involvement and now he's all but home free.

Marvellous News!

We have more news only it affects me and not him. I have had very poor vision for quite a few years now and have just worked with what it allows me to. A little more than a year ago I was diagnosed with Central Nervous System Vasculitis. In short it means my immune system has decided that the vascular system of my brain and spine are foreign bodies and has been trying to kill it off. Not fun. They put me on chemo drugs in the hopes of resetting my immune system and it has made a difference but just a small one until now.......

About 2 months ago they thought I had suffered a small stroke and they put me on steroids. Within a few weeks I noticed that I was seeing things like street lights I couldn't see before and the TV from the sofa. My eyesight has in fact improved so much that I've had to have my glasses changed. Saints be praised at night I can actually see a few stars which I have not seen in years. Needless to say they are keeping me on the steriods in hopes that this is not just a fleeting dream and I have an MRI booked in a few weeks to see just what the heck is going on. What ever it is I hope it continues and I pray it's permanent. :nerd:

I'm doing the happy dance right now. :hurray:

We got a call last week that it was imperative that we see the cancer specialist before hubbie starts his chemo today. We have spent the last week pacing wondering what was about to fall on us.
This morning we were told that the CT scan he went for showed an increase in size of the spots on his liver. That's when the call went out to us to come in. In the mean time the cancer guy and the liver surgeon and the radiologist had a pow wow and decided that it's not lesions but scar tissue from the surgery. WHEW :D everything is fantastic. Today he has his first of 4 rounds and then he'll have another CT but saints be praised it looks like for today anyway we all look good. Thank you for listening lord. [-o< God is certainly good. =D>
