Personal feuds -- zero tolerance policy
______________________________________

I am relaying some information to the forum membership that arises from conversations held on Friday evening between various moderators and our gracious hosts, with the helpful intervention of some long-time members.

First of all, some budding storm troopers were ushered to the exits, but many of you might not have even noticed them, for they lasted a good deal less than a thousand years, not even a thousand minutes.

More to the point, and of more lasting concern, we have decided that there must be a zero-tolerance policy on personal feuding on the forum.

A personal feud can be defined as an ongoing, largely personal rather than issue-driven, reciprocal hostility between two members, or among three or more members in groups, whatever you wish to identify, wherein the primary focus is a flame war intended to undermine forum member reputations, and not to advance arguments on policy, philosophy, politics or other primary interests of our forum.

I'm not here to cast blame or choose sides. I am here to announce that we, as a group, have decided to move to a zero-tolerance policy on these posts. First of all, the posts themselves will be deleted. We can't be expected to research the pros and cons of your personal arguments with one another or figure out whose reputation deserves to be elevated, and whose should be demoted. We prefer that forum reputation be based on your commentary and dialogue on the issues of importance to all of us.

These flame wars do nothing good for Free Dominion. They do nothing good for the people engaging in them either. We all get into these on odd occasions too, so I am not trying to say anything more than this -- whoever gets into a flame war, expect the same treatment. I don't care if you have 30 posts, or 30 thousand posts, or if you knew John Diefenbaker's mother in grade school, your flame wars will have to go outside into the playground, just like back in the day.

Sorry if this spoils anyone's fun, but there again, if anyone is coming here just to be entertained by flame wars, you would probably do better turning on the pro wrestling on the sports channel.

Now, moderators are not everywhere all the time. We have lives too.

So if you encounter a flame war and it doesn't almost instantly freeze because of our cold, dead hands, then PM a likely suspect and somebody will show up with a flame retardant suit and a delete button.

As you'll see, I have locked this announcement so you can't flame me (here). Other mods and administrators can probably break the code and post here if they want.

The other thing worth mentioning, as several found out, there is also to be a zero-tolerance policy on swearing here. This is not the Jerry Springer Show or World Wide Wrestling or even the United Nations, we got us some decorum here, y'all, and we plans to use 'er big-time.

Now, this is not an attempt to stifle debate, we don't care a fig if you disagree about Iranian nuclear ambitions, GST reductions, climate change, or the size of some starlet's boobs, but just don't flame each other. Comprenez-vous? C'est bon.

I should stress that all of the above is intended primarily as a courtesy to our gracious hosts, the incomparable duo who give us this opportunity.

Your feuds and other violations of forum rules, no matter what else they may be, are hurtful and disrespectful to the Fourniers. They have given in full measure on our behalf, against a sea of adversaries, to give Canadian (and American) conservatives and anyone else a place to engage in spirited free speech. This was not ever intended to be an invitation to flame wars of an individual nature.

No other large forums tolerate behaviour even half this rambunctious. On many forums, you are gone the first time you call another member an idiot -- if we were that strict, this place would be quieter than a bagel shop in Mecca. Our standards are not going to be nit-picking or vindictive. A flame war is a flame war. If anyone has any concerns, then PM me so I can fill up my inbox again. Winston Smith and I will try to pick up some of the slack because of the Fourniers' many pressing concerns and the health of our friend Westviking, who may not be on as often as usual for a little while.

We are bound and determined to keep Free Dominion the number one forum in conservative discussion -- and we need all hands on deck in the real fight. I would hope you all understand and will do your part to make this an even better place. We don't want to scare away good people either, and this has become a concern with some of the more recent excesses.

Thanks for some encouraging PMs and forum comments on this policy, and my congrats to everyone for the general improvement in tone around here today (keep it up).
