Conservatives want unemployed to fill jobs going to temporary foreign workers: Jason Kenney

Sarah Boesveld Apr 18, 2012 – 7:02 PM ET | Last Updated: Apr 18, 2012 9:28 PM ET
Ottawa is preparing to crack down on employment-insurance recipients who are not seeking work in areas where employers are forced to bring in foreign workers to fill jobs.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said Wednesday the government wants to reduce disincentives to work by creating a “greater connection” between the EI program and the temporary foreign worker program, which is under Mr. Kenney’s purview.

“What we will be doing is making people aware there’s hiring going on and reminding them that they have an obligation to apply for available work and to take it if they’re going to qualify for EI,” Mr. Kenney told the National Post editorial board on Wednesday. He was touting immigration reforms that will try to streamline the entry of immigrants and foreign workers, favouring entrepreneurs, innovators and those with high quality professional credentials.

The reforms would require unemployed Canadians to accept local jobs that are currently being filled by temporary foreign workers....................http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/04/18 ... on-kenney/

They're going to have to eliminate benefits in regions where jobs are going begging and scale back benefits in other areas where people can relocate to where the jobs are.

You mean people will take jobs if they stop getting free money?
That sounds zany!

Anybody unemployed here is not trying one bit. I'm not referring to the homeless mentally ill or addicts who are not employable. As they say, you generally need an address, a bank account and a SIN. Many of the people sleeping in the downtown McDonalds when the shelters usher mat service "clients" out here have neither, nor do they bath, shave or have clean cloths.

At job 2 I've made myself available and am always taken up on it. It's becoming nearly full time. I called Tuesday out of boredom to see if they needed a hand anywhere and they screamed for me to come in when I was otherwise not on the schedule. That's not the first time when I just called. I figured it would be 2-4 hours. I was there eight hours until 10:30 at night. Another time I was there as a customer when I heard myself paged. They spotted me on a security camera and asked if I could work. They cannot get staff.

EI is NOT free money. It's the money being taken at gunpoint from every employee's paycheck. If the government wants to force the unemployed to take jobs they don't want to take to avoid paying EI benefits, I prefer they abolish the EI scam altogether.

Years ago there was programs to bring farm workers to the prairies for harvest from central Canada and elsewhere.
Why can't we do something like this today for other occupations? This one is from 1911.

Secondly, what would be wrong with allowing employers to compete for labour with better wages and working conditions? Higher wages may force marginal businesses to close, freeing up labour for the more productive ones. Maybe we should allow Canadian labour markets to work. Higher wages will also attract more people to areas where needed.

The people you are referring to would not be affected by any of these changes at EI because in order to collect it one must have first held a job and these people haven't.

About time. Under the Liberals only people in the West were ever bullied to get out and work (my wife was brought randomnly with some others to a meeting). Meanwhile fisherman in Eastern Canada got to live off EI half the year and no one told them to get a bloody job!

That's how my grandfather an immigrant from the Netherlands living in Montreal came to work in Ontario first in forestry and then in the mines back in the 30's.

I remember reading an article a while back that was about some guy who was on EI and went across the border for a weekend. EI found out because of cross department checks that he had and deemed that he had not been available for work during that time and dinged him. That's when the proverbial poop hit the fan an people discovered stringing EI along wasn't as easy as it once was. http://www.servicecanada.gc.ca/eng/ei/t ... html#while

Obviously income support programs are a mess in this country.
But they also need to remove incentives to underpay employees, like temporary foreign workers.
There's plenty of Canadians who would do those jobs if the compensation was decent.

I'm sick to death of hearing people complain that 10 or 14 and hour isn't enough of an incentive to take a job. We paid off a house on less than that. In fact before hubby got sick he was making 12 and change after working for the same company for 39 years. It's not what you make but how you spend it that counts.
