As long as the person speaks English such that I can understand it, and is respectful, and is selling something not completely ridiculous, I am willing to listen to what they have to say.

People who worry about telemarketers think way too highly of themselves. How much is 45 seconds of your time really worth?

In my elderly mothers case that 45 seconds has taken her for more than 5 grand last year alone. #-o

Mine is terrified of bill collectors who phone her and is likely to pay anybody who says she owes them money. I have finally instructed her to refer all such calls to me or my brother in law who is an accountant and is now retired, e.g. "I'm sorry, but I will have to have my daughter/accountant get back to you." Since Daddy died there have been a few near misses, and several very kind gentlemen who cancelled the debt and offered their sympathy.

While subscribing to the DNC list is quite effective, it isn't a panacea to ridding your yourself of these pests.

But there is hope! Simply record the multi-tone sequence heard when dialing an out-of-service number. Then record it as a preamble to your normal greeting. The scammer's auto dialer will cue on this and not call you again. Be sure to advise your regular callers!

If you answer, tell them you consider them less than the street bum, and tell them to flock off, then hang up, they will NOT bother you again. :D

The calls I was getting endlessly were from the Conservative party. I sent them an email with copies to my riding association to cease and desist and made the same demand to the last person that called. I haven't had a call since.

The DNC list will help for live telemarketers.

What you are experiencing is a loophole in the law; telemarketers may not call your phone number on the DNC list, but machines can.

Understand also, that when you sign up for things online, or pay for things online, unless there is some verbiage that specifically states your info is not getting sold to a third party, it is. Probably to several third parties. It is these third parties that then may call you even though you are listed on the DNC, because they have gotten your phone number more recently than you signed up for DNC. At least this is my understanding.

My suggestion to you is invest $5 and get a caller ID box, then just don't answer unknown calls. That's just about the only way you're going to get around your problem, sorry. Sometimes technology is the answer to beat technology. :D

That's not very nice. Moreso now in this recessed, depressed economy we live with, people take the jobs they can get. For a lot of people that is telemarketing. You know good and well it is not their fault nor should they be the ones to take the verbal beating for your distaste for telemarketers - if you feel that strongly, just pre-empt whatever they say with "Let me speak to your supervisor", then tell the next person you want to speak to THEIR supervisor. Ask for their name and ID number. Then tell that person how you feel and request to be removed from their call list.

I use the no call list and it has cut out a lot of telemarketers.
I had one gal, a couple of years ago, call asking about a medical survey.
Before I could say "no thanks" she asked me if I had any allergies.
So I answered "yes, stupid people". Suddenly she was gone and that dial tone was nice to hear.

Cell Phones now have their own "do not call" list.

So do you think that the KGB rank and file are not responsible for following orders to murder innocent people?
