CBS MarketWatch Writer: It's a Depression, Not a Recession

And therefore -- he doesn't say this; this is the implication of it, as I read it -- Barack Obama didn't "save" us from any damn thing.

http://www.marketwatch.com/story/the-de ... picks=true

The Great Depression that Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke claims to have averted has been part of the background radiation of our economy since at least 2008.

It’s just that like radiation — it’s invisible.

We’ve called it the recovery, the jobless recovery, the slogging recovery and more recently the fading recovery. We’ve measured modest growth in our nation’s gross domestic product to record that our so-called Great Recession ended in June 2009. And now we are saying that if this disappointing growth suddenly disappears, as currently feared, we will be in a new recession.

There is nothing more depressing than hearing about a new recession when you haven’t fully recovered from the last one. I take heart in suspecting that in a still-distant future, historians will look back with clarity and call this whole rotten period a depression.

The precise definition of a depression, of course, remains as debatable as anything else in the field of economics. By some definitions, it is a long-term slump in economic activity, often characterized by unusually high unemployment, a banking crisis, a sovereign-debt crisis, surprising bankruptcies and other horrible symptoms we can find in the headlines almost every day.

It is easy to avoid seeing all of these events as constituting a depression if you somehow have kept your livelihood intact all this time. But it’s important to remember that not everyone has to stand in a bread line during a depression.

And then he lists the grim tidings that are easily seen by anyone with the eyes brave enough to look.

Some more on this: Other countries have gone through what we're going through now. Most famously Japan, with its "lost decade," a recession (or depression) severe enough to penetrate the popular imagination in far-away America and instantly end the "Red Sun Rising" fears Japan instilled in us just two or three years before.

Among the counties that have suffered a similar crisis: All of them recovered more strongly than the US is recovering now.
http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/01/w ... r-decades/

Now, Japan's crash and Lost Decade was an event of such magnitude that it (I hope I am not overstating) changed the trajectory of the country for the next half century, and not for the better. And we're doing worse than that.

This is the worst "recovery" by any nation since 1970,
http://www.aei-ideas.org/2012/07/u-s-re ... ince-1970/
and it could be partly due to a category error: We're not recovering from a recession, we're still in the depths of a depression.

The ISM index of manufacturing activity showed a contraction
http://finance.yahoo.com/news/manufactu ... 34532.html
for the second straight month, and the ADP jobs report shows another month of bare-bones employment.
http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/01/a ... g-in-july/

The Fed understatedly notes that the "recovery" has "decelerated somewhat,"
http://www.cnbc.com/id/48444211
much as a human body falling from a skyscraper's balcony might "decelerate somewhat" at street level.

Fed officials described the economy as having "decelerated somewhat,'' and reiterated their disappointment with the slow pace of progress in bringing down the nation's 8.2 percent jobless rate.

Ever notice how people flee to the clinical comfort of bloodless language when they're forced to speak of bloody things?

Here's a quote by Megan McArdle
http://www.theatlantic.com/business/arc ... oot/17510/
that has stuck with me since I read it soon after the beginning of the crisis (and have referred to it several times since then).

I don't want to push the Great Depression analogy too far, but what's surprising when you go back to primary sources from 1930 is the optimism. I don't mean to imply that everyone thinks things are just swell. But while you know that they are facing the worst economic decade of the twentieth century, they don't. They're expecting something more like the recession that followed World War I. People are cutting back, but they're still spending, particularly because companies are slashing prices to move inventory. It was the long grind of the years that followed, and the catastrophe of the second banking crisis, that scarred them permanently.

Depressions are so noted retroactively. Only after 8 or 10 (or more) years of persistently high unemployment, "recoveries" without recovery, false hope and new set-backs do people start to realize "This might actually be a depression."

The line of demarcation, as I understand it, between a depression and a recession is only this: You don't recover quickly from a depression, as you do from a recession. Thus, you really can't know you're in a depression until you fail, and fail, and fail some more at recovery.

And none of this, of course, excuses Barack Obama for his failures. His supporters might argue (were they honest enough to admit his failure) that given the situation, it was easy for him to miss the signs that this was a serious, possibly nearly permanent, wound to the economy.

Well, it might have been easy. But it's always easy to fail. It's harder to be successful than to fail, which is why we have -- at least previously -- rewarded success, so that people might have an incentive to attempt that which is difficult, rather than accepting the default, easy path of failure.

We didn't elect him to fail, whether it's easy to fail or not.

Every failure comes with a bodyguard of a thousand excuses or justifications. But, at least previously in our history, we have insisted on the hard success over the easy excuse for failure.

I sincerely pray we do not further reward this miserable failure for his incompetence. It would be the death of us.

And no post about the economy would be complete without something "unexpectedly" happening. Bloomberg obliges.

U.S. Manufacturing Unexpectedly Shrinks for Second Month
http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2012-08-0 ... month.html

Yes, unexpectedly. It's a real shocker. I haven't been this stunned since I learned that Boy George intended to never take a wife. I had always seen him as the Patriarch type, livin' off the land, siring a great and wild-hearted brood of pioneers and horse-breakers.

Thanks to @johnekdahl for the MarketWatch tip and to Jammie Wearing Fool for the "unexpected" turn of events.

Perfect.
Winner winner, chicken dinner.

44 But it’s important to remember that not everyone has to stand in a bread line during a depression.
If the 45 Million Americans on Food Stamps had to stand in a bread line to pick up their food, the line would stretch, six men abreast, from New York City to Los Angeles, California.
We think things were worse in the Great Depression because we remember all of those old photographs. But we have just gotten better at hiding the poor.

Posted by: Haiku Guy

Yep. That's how I see it...

56 There are two things which effect EVERY business.

1. The cost of Government. This the cost of doing business imposed on you by your own Government, that includes Taxes, and all the time and effort needed to do Government Paperwork, AND all the things you can't do because of Regulation.

2. Cost of Energy. EVERY business is effected by the cost of energy. If you look at economic activity there is a direct corelation with energy prices.

Obama has driven BOTH of those factors up... thus, no true economic growth (with 8% of the GDP being Government deficit spending, we have not grown since pre 2008 IMO).

Posted by: Romeo13

70 I'll know I'll get pilloried for this statement. Obama didn't cause the current Depression, he was part of it, he made it worse. ...Posted by: The Robot Devil at August 01, 2012 03:47 PM

I don't totaly disagree. However, even though he was running around in 2007 - 2008 saying, "worst economy since the Great Depression," I don't think he actually believed it and many of the economic indicators had been worse during the Carter administration. Bastard thought he could toss $1 Trillion at all his leftist wet-dream projects and take credit when the economy bounced back "just like it always does" by early 2010.Based on the fact that the Democrats were responding to the economic crisis almost precisely like the Hoover administration, I predicted in early 2009 that they were going to precipitate a depression. A Romney administration won't be the answer to all our problems but the economy is certainly not going to improve under an Obama administration.

"Their relative disengagement represents a real threat to President Obama’s re-election campaign,” the pollsters wrote. “… We find consistent evidence that President Obama’s 2008 first-time voters are less supportive than other Obama voters, reflecting a decline in enthusiasm among a key voting bloc in the 2012 elections.”

They were promised love and Happily Ever After; what they got was twenty minutes of parasexual fumbling in the back of van bought at government auction and just a touch of Herpes. No wonder they have mixed feelings about that once-wonderful night. No one ever forgets their first time. Alas.

The CFA affair has implications that extend to the November elections. This is significant. It's part of Glenn Reynold's and Ace's preference cascade. While it is specifically about standing up to Ghey Bullies, and it is part of the "I'm not going to take this anymore!" it goes beyond that.

Heretofore Teh Gheys were a special protected minority who could not be talked back to or opposed- now, they can.

Duh!1 had better watch himself- he's next in the line of "it's OK to notice something is all wrong with this situation..." http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/

More here. http://twitchy.com/2012/08/01/boycott-fail-redux-citizens-santa-unite-for-chick-fil-a-appreciation-day-photos-show-huge-success/

And John Lucas sends this picture of the Chick-Fil-A in Maryville, TN. I saw a similar traffic jam outside another Chick-Fil-A near my house.

Image

And Lucas adds: “As I watched this phenomenon, I was struck by two related thoughts. The first is that there is that the force that propelled Ted Cruz to a 13 point victory in Texas ultimately is the same one that is causing thousands of people to turn out to support Chick Fil-A in small towns and large cities across the country. The second is that the people who buck the traffic jams (you should have seen them) just to stand in line for 30 minutes to get a chicken sandwich are people who are going to vote in November. The Democrats will attack or ignore them; the Republicans ignore them at their peril.”

I agree — and as someone who supported gay marriage long before President Obama did (which is to say, long before a couple of months ago), I’m nonetheless gratified to see people standing up to the bullying that the left-political class has aimed at this honest business simply because its owners failed to change their views in synch with President Obama.

Exactly, JB- I oppose Ghey "marriage" because it is merely a stick in the eye to straight folks- it's got not a thing to do with inheritance rights ( make a Will ) or hospital visitations ( Power of Attorney, anyone? )...

Because I won't handclap & cheerlead Ghey Marriage I'm called a H8TR! Homophobic! Anti-Ghey!

And all those slurs & smears & catcalls the Ever Tolerant & Inclusive Left likes to fling at opponents.

Funny, I lived next door to two gay gals for 23 years- they were nice neighbors and when they first moved in I gave them a 12 gauge coach gun for a housewarming present... with the admonition

"Nobody has right to hurt you- if you think you are going to be hurt you shoot that son of a bitch and let your lawyer deal with it- that's what lawyers are for..."

And if they had been a pair of men, acting the same way, I'd have done the same thing- it's nobody's GD business what consenting adults do in private.

I don't want our Ghey Brethren dead, diseased, or anything else bad- I'd just like for the noisier ones to act more civilly.

Unlike "the religion of ( Gag, hack... ) Peace," which kills them. I have posted pictures before, elsewhere, of gays being hung over in Sand Nazi Land for the "crime" of being queer. From cranes. From scaffolds. From truck beds.

Jesus Christ in a sidecar, it would have been less cruel to simply have shot them. But the dumber of the Feminists & Gheys embrace "solidarity" with Islam in the hopes it will help them tear down The Dreaded Patriarchy that they foolishly think is the source of all their problems.

And guess what? If they actually achieve their goals, Islam will come after them next.

BOB OWENS: The Cluck Heard ‘Round The World.http://www.bob-owens.com/2012/08/the-cluck-heard-round-the-world/

Clearly, this is more than a “buycott” over gay marriage. If the smattered of people I’ve talked to are representative, homosexuality is a side issue.

This strikes a much deeper, more foundational chord.

The massive crowd reaction locally and nationwide are driven by a loathing of arrogant politicians like those in Boston, New York, Chicago and San Francisco who feel they have the power and the authority to tell a businessman like Dan Cathy what personal opinions he can and cannot hold if he wants to do business in “their” towns.

They trampled on his religious beliefs. They trampled on his freedom of speech. They attempted to deny him and his franchisees the rights to start small businesses, merely because a free American dared to share what he believed.

Maybe it is a preference cascade. If so, you can thank Rahm.

Yep- and it's going to fall on Zer0 next- people are going to look around, see all those "for sale" signs that have been up since 2008, and wonder "What the Hell happened to that Hope we voted for?"

Like Greg Sargeant was saying early today on Twitter, "Oh is everybody still talking about Chick-Fil-A? Uhm....why?"

They have no fucking clue how many normal Americans view their tactics and this latest fascistic episode of their PC BS.

Lackoff strategy has so brainwashed them I'm beginning to suspect they have conditioned themselves to short-circuit their own thinking processes in order to avoid 'thoughtcrime'. This is why they can't grasp that over 80% of the country doesn't accept their agenda of driving opposition to SSM out of the public square.

They pretend the debate is already over, and anybody who PUBLICLY questions the OFFICIAL VIEW is a heretic and so everybody SHOULD go all 'burn the withc!!' on the heretics ass.

Only they keep being SURPRISE again and again when the mobs with the pitchforks not only don't materialize, they vote and act in a way in direct CONTRADICTION to what they assholes expected.

And they'll never figure it out. They are something like 0-32 on SSM when it's put to the voters in the states, but they press on acting like they've ALREADY WON and anybody who publicly dissents is committing a terrible social faux pas.

"Most Transparent Administration in History" Secret Deals Exposed

While we're waiting for the Blogger-in-Chief, has this been covered?

We knew that the White House made some shady deals with PhRMA during the Obamacare negotiations, even though he'd promised the American people that healthcare negotiations would be done in public. But we now know that the White House went even further than that in deceiving voters.

Not only did they hold these shady meetings. They held these shady meetings outside the White House, so they could escape federal disclosure law. And the chief negotiator for this, Jim Messina, then deputy chief of staff and current manager of Obama's reelection campaign, concealed even this by using his private email account to arrange the meetings.

A House Energy and Commerce Committee report out Tuesday is stocked with emails sent from private addresses and meetings scheduled away from the building to avoid official record. Among these are several sent to a pharmaceutical industry lobbyist by Messina, then President Barack Obama’s then-deputy White House chief of staff, making promises about language for the health care reforms despite the resistance of then-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to the measure.

“I will roll [P]elosi to get the 4 billion,” Messina wrote Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA) lobbyist Jeffrey Forbes from his personal account just days before the Affordable Care Act cleared Congress in March 2010. “As you may have heard I am literally rolling over the house. But there just isn’t 8-10 billion.”

Messina arranged for these clandestine meetings to take place at a Caribou Coffee near the White House.

Now, the White House isn't denying this. Press Secretary Jay Carney is merely replying that Messina was "diligent in copying his official email address to preserve records of the emails."

That's a fine deflection. It doesn't answer the question at all. Did Messina copy these particular messages to his official account? The White House isn't saying. And that's answer enough.

When Will Harry Reid Address The Growing Concerns About His Pederasty?

Hysterical screencap at Instapundit.http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/147897/

He links Stace's piece, wherein Reid actually says "I don't think the burden [of proof re: Romney's "unpaid taxes"] should be on me." It's not Harry Reid's burden to prove the thing he just made up, you see. It's Romney's burden to disprove the thing Reid just made up.

Meanwhile, millions of parents in DC and Nevada send their sons to school every day without knowing whether Harry Reid is, or is not, a pederast.

(Sorry for late start: Power is out. Waited for it to come on; it didn't. Now I'm in a bar, rockin' a diet coke.)

Remember? When Republicans were in charge the Left asserted "It's the seriousness of the charge- not the facts- that matter."

Well?

20 I think Reid has illegally accessedIRS files.I do not know for sure, but there is evidence -- his claimed knowledge of what is in those files. Arrest him and makehim prove he did not illegally access them.

34 I still think that Romney should call for a full investigation of whether or not he paid his taxes during those years (tax evasion is a Fed crime, after all). Then, when it comes out that he did pay his taxes, and that Harry Reid didn't have any sources (that is: he just made it up), Romney should call for a "Full, public apology on the Senate Floor" or sue for Slander.

Note: The comments on the Senate floor would be immune, but the ones he made to reporters should not be.

87 Wife and I went to Chick-Fil-A last night, and the line was huge. I had the top down on the car, and she was holding up a big sign saying "Exercising my 1st amendment rights". Everyone wanted to take a picture of her and her sign.

The fun thing was the girl at the drive-thru line who apologized to us about the wait. I told her, "no problem, we have plenty of time".

On a serious note, if you haven't read this, do:

“In the swing states they are being assailed with ads and campaigning, as well as the news. And here Obama seems to be building a bit of a margin. He now is ahead by solid margins in the most recent surveys in Ohio, Florida, Pennsylvania, Michigan, Nevada, Virginia, Iowa, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. It's very close in Colorado, and Romney has a slight lead in North Carolina.

This article paints a very bad picture right now.

Romney needs to get on this.

And, I need to send him more money, it seems.

YEAH, HOW’S THAT WORKIN’ OUT? Two Years Ago Today: Turbo-Tax Tim Wrote “Welcome To the Recovery” For NY Times. Was that the first “recovery summer,” or the second? It’s hard to keep track. Good times, good times.http://yidwithlid.blogspot.com/2012/08/two-years-ago-todayturbo-tax-tim-wrote.html

UPDATE: Big miss in June manufacturing: Orders down 0.5%, shipments down 1.1%.http://hotair.com/archives/2012/08/02/big-miss-in-june-manufacturing-orders-down-0-5-shipments-down-1-1/

So? Is this Receovery(less) Summer Three? Or Four? I've lost count in the thicket of "for sale" signs on stuff that hasn't sold since Duh!1 began "ruling" us...

Reporter pulls rant about Chick-fil-A customers

Fort Myers News-Press reporter Mark Krzos’ Facebook post about Chick-fil-A Appreciation Day customers had nearly 100 shares before it was pulled earlier today. (“The level of hatred, unfounded fear and misinformed people was astoundingly sad,” he wrote. “I can’t even print some of the things people said. …It was like broken records of Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh and a recitation of half-truths and outright lies.”)

(Credit: Dials/TobyToons

I’ve twice asked Krzos to comment, but have yet to hear from him.

Meanwhile, Mollie Ziegler Hemingway at GetReligion.org writes that she was tipped off to Krzos’s comments by an “alarmed reader.” Mollie says she ate at the chicken chain yesterday, and “it was almost like a party atmosphere. Lots of families. Lots of mothers. I saw a friend and his son and I joked that the food tasted like freedom and the whole line kind of laughed. It was obvious that people were there for a reason.”

She tells her readers:

Do let us know if you see any good or bad coverage. I thought this Los Angeles Times story was fine but had a stupid headline and overplayed some incidents from spectators and protesters. The LA Times also, of course, ran a bigoted, error-prone and hate-filled screed (from what I hear is its business writer) against Christians the day before the day Chick-fil-A had record sales under the headline “Chick-fil-A gets a lesson on corporate outspokenness.” That’s not just a problem of bad timing. The Huntsville Times had a pretty good angle for its coverage.

Polls are meaningless this far out and the only one that counts is the election... however, this gives new meaning to "meaningless..."

http://minx.cc/?post=331580

Pew uses D+19 sample,

Finds Obama ahead 51-41.

I really thought a double-digit inflated edge would be the limit, but I had no clue someone would go for a number three times the 2008 margin.

Utterly shameful D/R/I of 43%-24%-32%, but it is all about the headline.
Independents still favor Romney in the poll, but with a result that lopsided the topline number was a foregone conclusion.

I'm sure if Rasmussen pushed a poll showing an R+10 electorate, the lulz would never cease. Pew? Total silence.

Okay then. When D+2 becomes the norm in mid-October, I say we switch out their smelling salts for the bath variety...

12 they have to double down on the propaganda ever since Preazy went off TOTUS and came up with that YOU DIDN"T BUILD THAT gem. That's why Harry Reid is beclowning himself more than usual lately too.

Speaking of the Kenyan, where is he? One place he was not was in the stands with the Phelps family from Baltimore today which is precisely where President Bush and Laura were four years ago as Michael was breezing to eight Gold medals b*tch slapping the field.

Does Obama not support America's finest? The crowd in London was chanting USA, USA after the final Phelps - Lochte individual showdown of the games for their photo finish. Where was the Kenyan-Indonesian-Irishman? I find it hard to believe he had something better to do or someplace more important to be.
