Tax havens: Super-rich 'hiding' at least $21tn

A global super-rich elite had at least $21 trillion (£13tn) hidden in secret tax havens by the end of 2010, according to a major study.

The figure is equivalent to the size of the US and Japanese economies combined.

The Price of Offshore Revisited was written by James Henry, a former chief economist at the consultancy McKinsey, for the Tax Justice Network.

Tax expert and UK government adviser John Whiting said he was sceptical that the amount hidden was so large.

Mr Whiting, director of the Office of Tax Simplification, said: "There clearly are some significant amounts hidden away, but if it really is that size what is being done with it all?"

Mr Henry said his $21tn is actually a conservative figure and the true scale could be $32tn. A trillion is 1,000 billion.

Mr Henry used data from the Bank of International Settlements, International Monetary Fund, World Bank, and national governments.

His study deals only with financial wealth deposited in bank and investment accounts, and not other assets such as property and yachts.

The report comes amid growing public and political concern about tax avoidance and evasion. Some authorities, including in Germany, have even paid for information on alleged tax evaders stolen from banks.

The idea that moving your money offshore is to be automatically 'hiding' is asinine, or propaganda at best. Many people leave their birth countries in retirement and have no legal tax obligations as long as they are non residents. Most of this money is surely after tax income.

Sounds like a propaganda campaign by the global bank transaction taxation scum.

This entire article is directed at those who would demand their unfair share of after tax income belonging to someone else. I feel an NDP lecture coming on in there somewhere. Hang on to your wallets the socialist are putting pen to paper again.

I buried the damn stuff 4 feet deep at the back end of the farm. I placed a double covering of tinfoil over it before I buried it.

...now your telling me some computer geek found it!
Acres of land I had to push back. All that work for nothing.

Actually the general public couldn't care less as they are too busy trying to make ends meet, the political concern is real enough as govt hates competition when it comes to thieving....

Nations that tax investments highly will find investors take their money elsewhere. Any nation that has a lower investment tax rate thus becomes a 'tax haven'. This is all about avaricious politicians being miffed that they are not getting the tax money they desire. The malady is self-inflicted and the funds are not hidden.
The most effective way to stifle democracy is to transfer decision-making from the public arena to unaccountable institutions: activist judges, human rights tribunals, parliamentary committees, civil service bureaucrats and political party hacks.

I certainly hope so.

"Tax Justice Network"? What are they about? Stopping us from getting robbed every time we fill the car or buy a 6-pack?
