The food protection racket Canadian producers have right now means poor people aren't able to afford milk for their kids. I am typing a .25 mile away from 600 head of cattle grazing here. Why the hell is Canadian milk and cheese almost twice the price of U.S. product across the New Brunswick U.S. border? It was the same in Ontario/N.Y.

You can always pick out the Canadians in the US supermarkets because they have a basket of dairy products and I turkey

U.S. drought to push Cdn. food prices up 3-4% in 2013

The Canadian Press
Published Monday, Aug. 6, 2012 6:34AM EDT

TORONTO -- Food prices may grow by as much as four per cent next year, economists predict, as drought conditions in the U.S. are expected to inflate the cost of everything from pork to cereal.

RBC economist Paul Ferley says the increases will be similar to those seen in 2011, when demand from emerging economies like China and India pushed food prices higher.

Skyrocketing food prices need political action

This week, the speculators who bet on the future price of corn and soybeans have driven the price of those basic staples to all-time highs.

They think that the hot, dry weather loved by those on vacation this summer - that was me for the last few weeks - is going to translate into some lousy harvests later this year.

Buyers and sellers in the futures market are betting the U.S. Department of Agriculture crop estimate that's out this Friday will forecast an American corn harvest that will be the worst in nearly two decades, a result of what some are saying is the worst drought in the American Midwest in more than 50 years.

Already, some believe that rapidly rising price corn and soybean prices means your grocery store bill will be, on average, 4% higher next year.

But get this: You are already paying a whole lot more right now for some basic food staples. According to Statistics Canada, a kilogram of ground beef cost an average of about $8.20 this time last year. Now, it's over $9.20/kg, a jump of 12% in one year. A box of corn flakes is up 10%. A case of cola costs 15% more. A jar of baby food is up more than 6%........................http://www.torontosun.com/2012/08/07/sk ... cal-action

Drought, high feed prices force cash-strapped Eastern Ontario ranchers farmers to ponder livestock sell-offs

By PETER HENDERSON, The Ottawa Citizen August 7, 2012 9:28 PM

OTTAWA — Owning a horse ranch is a labour of love for Ben Jardine, but the drought that’s gripped Eastern Ontario for months might mean the end of his passion project.

Without fresh grass to feed his livestock, Jardine has had to buy bales of hay — currently selling at nearly triple their normal price — to feed his 48 horses and ponies as well as an assortment of donkeys, sheep, and llamas.

But he can’t maintain that level of spending indefinitely, he said, and the family is looking to downsize its herd by at least 20 animals, or by nearly half.

“It’s very emotional, both for my wife and myself,” he said. “But it’s the reality now, to be able to survive as a small business this summer.”

Jardine explained his plight to Ontario Federation of Agriculture president Mark Wales on Tuesday afternoon as Wales toured the area to get a first-hand look at the damage from one of the driest summers in memory.

Yields for most crops, not just hay, are down dramatically, and even a late-summer monsoon would be too little to save many farmers’ fields. Corn especially is too far gone in most cases, illustrated by a shrivelled cob of the staple crop that Wales held in his hand

“People are really having to figure out how many animals can they feed through the winter, how can they afford to do that,” he said.

Bumper grain crop for Canada forecast amid U.S. drought

Canadian farmers are anticipating large increases in the size of their canola, wheat and barley crops this year, setting them up well to benefit from a drought devastating the agricultural sector south of the border.

"From a historical point of view, that size of crop we would see maybe once in a decade or so," Canadian Wheat board crop expert Bruce Burnett said.

Statistics Canada issued new data Wednesday showing canola is set to hit an all time high this year. Prairie farmers anticipate a record 15.2 million metric tonnes in 2012, besting the record of 14 million set last year. Farmers in all three Prairie provinces anticipate an increase in canola production, with the potential for records in Saskatchewan and Alberta.

All grains increase

Wheat is also forecast to do well, with total production expected to reach 24.8 million tonnes in 2012, up 9.7 per cent from 22.6 million tonnes in 2011. The increase is wheat is largely due to more acres being harvested. The harvested area increased by 11.4 per cent this year to just under 22 million acres, Statistics Canada said. That was enough to offset a decline in output per acre, which has dropped from 42.1 bushels last year to 41.5.

Barley is sharply higher, anticipated to rise 23.8 per cent to nine million tonnes in 2012. That's due to a record 65.1 bushels per acre yield, but also an increase in the number of acres harvested.

Soybean production is anticipated to increase 3.7 per cent to just over 4.4 million tonnes and the production of corn for grain is anticipated to reach just over 11.7 million tonnes, up 9.5 per cent from last year's level.

All in all, it's setting up to be a banner year across all of Canada's field crops.

Food prices jump will hit poor, World Bank warns
Damaged corn in a field in Oakland City, Indiana A severe drought in the US has led to many farmers having to abandon their 2012 harvest

Global food prices have leapt by 10% in the month of July, raising fears of soaring prices for the planet's poorest, the World Bank has warned.

The bank said that a US heatwave and drought in parts of Eastern Europe were partly to blame for the rising costs.

The price of key grains such as corn, wheat and soybean saw the most dramatic increases, described by the World Bank president as "historic"...............http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-19431890
