It's the BORROWING that's the poison pill...otherwise the government WINS in either case....more revenue. I'm in favor of a FLAT TAX...that way you can actually figure out what you're being charged instead of all the little "add ons" which are not "called" taxes but in reality are....look at a U.S. phone bill, for instance.

I believe that is why the GST replaced the manufacturing tax. There was no transparency. Do we really want the Euro system where the VAT is nowhere to be seen? One has no clue whether the retailer is bilking the consumer or if it is the government. I think we should always know when and where the government is taking their piece. Canada has lots of hidden taxes, especially on the provincial level.

Some speak of a flat tax, but what they really mean is a flat rate for all. That is still progressive as 10% on a $100,000 income is more than 10% on a $50,000 income. A head tax is simply saying everyone pays $1000 regardless of wage level. Probably too regressive for the mixed big government state.

I actually liked how the US government of old raised funds - via tariffs. These were not punitve tariffs but simply revenue raising tariffs of say 4 to 5%.

Again, a tariff or head tax imply a government much much smaller than what either of nations have.

Thanks for info HDM - sadly the chance now of Huck winning is astronomical. I agree, I never thought about the "savings" argument behind fair tax. It would reward true conservative behaviour of saving our money - rather than the current nonsense of encouraging spending.

The strongest supporters of Romney flee for the hills when this is mentioned: who actually gets it as to why the Republicans were booted to minority status in the House and Senate in 2006.

Just like the Contract with America was an attempt to introduce ideas that work in State Capitals into Washington, ideas considered to be outside by the Beltway cabal is the only option for the GOP to regain momentum in gaining seats in the House and Senate - and John McCain can hardly be regarded as an outsider.

Senator Sessions is also working on a solution to the illegal immigrant problem.

Then, the endorsement of Charles Dobson of Mike Huckabee
means something, because there are people in Texas and Kansas and the other states yet to have a caucus or primary who listen to "Focus on the family" or "Adventures in Odyssey".

It ain't over until someone gets the number of delegates to win the nomination.

Ron Paul has suggested many things. During his entire 20 year tenure in congress, however, I don't think he's ever managed to turn any of his suggestions into reality.

There's some advantages to the Fair Tax, which is more-or-less a national sales tax, most notably that it encourages saving. Gov. Huckabee's critics note, however, the bureaucracy required to administer his particular plan would be comparable in size to the IRS he seeks to eliminate.

I say 10 and a half years of being governor has earned Mike Huckabee some insight as to how the executive branch in the United States runs. For, the last time I checked, Washington as well as each of the States have divided government into three sections: executive, legislature, judiciary.

Also, check the blog entries from volunteers over at http://www.mikehuckabee.com as to why they support him.

It is still okay for you to do your own homework.

The real point is those GOP members that support illegal activity try to cloud the issue or hide behind red herrings like coming up with the whole children thing. Forget about that - what is Huck gonna do to stop the traffic and deal with the 20 million here? Will he give jail time to employers who hire illegals? In fact I submit that those that support illegal immigrant activity are not conservatives. Now I can have a reasonable disagreement with those that support guest workers or more immigration. I think they are wrong - it took me awhile to get here too. But no real conservative excuses illegal activity and then plays the race card against the Minutemen and others who are trying to stop the invasion.

I am sure Ron Paul, who has been against progressive tax systems for decades, has suggested aboloshing the IRS. Fair Tax? Still sounds too progressive to me. The only justifiable tax is a what Cromwell called a head tax.

Huck wants to abolish the IRS.

Imagine a Canadian running on a platfrom to abolish RevCan.

Not in my wildest dreams.

IRS and RevCan are not competitive with low tax models in India, China and other emerging economies that we all have to compete against.

Is about time we fight this and reduce government to a level that is competitive again.
