The Maritimes were doing just fine before confederation with the established north-south trade routes. Things went to pot after confederation when they were forced to change their trade to east-west. Oh, how I would like to hit the rewind button and attain self-sufficiency.

What's really going on here is that the debate over global warming is not an argument about the future of the environment, but about the future of the economy. It is about who controls the means of production - people or the government (or "government sponsored entities").

The fight over climate change is primarily a fight about whether big government should control everything from the largest to the most minute aspects of economic activity, or whether our economy should remain at least relatively free. After all, control of energy production and use is tantamount to control of the entire economy.

Yes, exactly.

And I would further add that conservatives are less likely to be dishonest about their affection for all mod cons while liberals like to talk about human selfishness and how destructive we humans are but they continue to drive their SUV's and do as they please. Like so many other things they do, they think that paying lip service and paying indulgences absolves them of their guilt.

We'll see how much they believe in AGW once they figure out how much this is really going to cost them and they actually have to put their money where their mouths are.

Here's a little eye opening excersize. Every city has it's Granola Heights area, where all the envirowackys tend to congregate and live together in harmony. They dictate what we use on our lawns, how your cat should run free and how the world will come to an end because of GW or CC. Spend some time and go to some Open Houses on property for sale in that area of "dictators of policy for the rest of us to live by". We have. What we found was drafty houses with old windows and doors, octopus furnases and uninsulated attics and basements. These people have done next to nothing.

We have found that those that insist we pull our weight do nothing for themselves unless there is a government incentive. How is it that if you are so overly concerned that you do nothing for yourself? The government has in place grants for improvements but we have heard complaints that in order to obtain this money you have to first put up your own. Apparently that's just too much for them. This area in our city is filled with professionals and income in not an excuse.

Liars the pro baby murder/torture crowd be, denying the obvious, that even legalized baby murdering causes deaths, as many/more as illegal abortions caused/cause. Further abortion is more dangerous than childbirth, far more dangerous.

Definitely. Making it legal hasn't made it any safer despite pro-choice rhetoric.

Abortion is absolutely horrific, in every way imaginable.

The left are damned liars in this issue as well as all others they seek to impose.

Lie # 1 - Women have a right to control their own bodies. Since when did a woman's body have two separate heart beats, two separate sets of brainwaves, and two different blood types?

Lie # 2 - Abortion is justified in rake and incest cases. There are 6000 abortions daily in continental North America, are we to believe that all these were because of rape and incest? Truth is that abortion is used primarily as a birth control method, proving that women in fact did not have control of their bodies before they decided to jump into bed with some irresponsible idiot.

Lie # 3 - The fetus is a non entity, it is not human. Has any woman ever given birth to anythign but a human being? ( exceptions are mothers of notables like mugabe, supergrebe, crybaby, rapists, pimps, hrc inquisitors etc)

The abortion industry exists all because of the love of the damned dollar. Some greedy bastards will do anything for money, and I wish at least the cowards and liars involved in this desecration of women and torture/murder of babies would at least admit the truth instead of hiding behind their cowardly lies.
What "mess" is that? I'm surrounded by plentiful food, cattle, fresh water, blue skies. Was there I memo I didn't get?

You two walk into a grocery store lately?? If you are only feeding one you may not notice the rising costs of food. But if your feeding six on one income it would be irresponsible not to start practising ways to protect your family from the current climbing food costs.

HSMom,

For whatever reason, a lot of people who are personally doing well tend to think everything is doing well. Red Dog and C. Morgan are both businesspeople in Alberta, at least one of whom interacts directly with the oilpatch. The oil patch is doing well. The sky is blue, there's plentiful food, and thus no sweatin it.

My life is going rather well as well. The sky is blue, I'm getting healthier, I'm doing research, I'm a good teaching assistant, and I've paid off my debts. I'm not going to start believing everything is rosy. Doesn't mean I shouldn't prepare... such situations are always more tenuous than people think. Seeing as how food inflation is running at 25% it makes sense for anyone to stockpile.

********

You have four kids? wow! boys or girls?

I totally agree with your assessment of Red Dog and C. Morgan. Unless it directly affects them, then they have no compassion or understanding for the lesser mortals who have to deal with the rising costs of food.
By STEVE SIMMONS

http://www.ottawasun.com/Sports/Beijing2008/2008/07/24/6248146-sun.html

For once, there was no argument --except among the idiots of Quebec, who will always find fault with everything that isn't French.

For once, the choice was easy and obvious, no matter what language Adam van Koeverden happens to speak.

He had to be the Olympic flag bearer for Canada at the Beijing Olympics.

Because of who he is. Because of what he does. And maybe more importantly than either, because of how he approaches sport.

Because the language he speaks best in this country is the language of champion.

Van Koeverden is what every Canadian Olympian ought to aspire to be. He embodies just about every quality the Canadian Olympic Committee is searching for with its athletes.

He wins. He competes. He trains like a madman. He understands that canoe/kayak isn't always front-page news. He speaks with the confidence of a broadcaster and intelligence of a professor.

And through it all, there is purely Canadian sense of humility that van Koeverden has grown into at age 26. You know that by how he responded to being told he was going to carry the Canadian flag in the opening ceremony in Beijing.

Canada's chef de mission, Sylvie Bernier, made the drive to Ottawa last week to tell van Koeverden he had been selected as flag bearer. Van Koeverden had been given some warning that someone from the COC wanted to meet with him. An athlete more full of himself might have figured out why. But in the midst of training, van Koeverden was too focused on his work to consider the possibility that he was going to get the call.

"That," he joked, " was pretty amateur of me."

Amateur, maybe. Revealing, yes. When van Koeverden marches into the sold-out stadium in Beijing two weeks from today, he will be making his first appearance in an opening ceremony. He has never marched before.

Four years ago, he watched the opening ceremony on television from the French castle in which he had rented for his pre-Olympic training. He muttered under his breath that he should have been there.

Now he has no choice.

"I'm just going for a walk," said van Koeverden, when asked about the potential pressure that goes along with carrying the flag. "I'm going for a walk and I'm going to be inspired. I'm carrying a flag that I've dreamed about carrying my entire life.

"I'm proud to be Canadian. Nothing could bring me more pride and inspiration and motivation than to carry it. I think about 30 million people back home, with their eyes lighting up, will be watching the flag march in with the Maple Leaf being part of the bigest even in history. It's crazy to call it a burden. It's a huge privilege and honour."

Van Koeverden won two of Canada's 12 medals in Athens four years ago. He is expected to do just about the same this time around.

"He had that winning attitude that we're looking for," said COC boss Chris Rudge. "He's an exceptional young man."

You may remember, four years ago, that not everything was going Canada's way when van Koeverden arrived in Athens. By then, we had heard a week of excuses, about how we're too small, too weak, too cheap, too lazy, to compete at the highest level of sport.

Van Koeverden was asked about the whining.

"You can't fall into a corner and cry and say the Canadian sports system has let me down," van Koeverden said. "If you're training for the Olympics and you're not ready, the only person to blame is yourself. You can't expect to get things done for you.

"If there's a problem with funding, fine, find something else. If you want to be successful, you can't let it hinder you ... it's the Canadian way to blame and we have to get away from that."
Putting the flag in van Koeverden's hands is a start -- a language even the small minds of Quebec should be able to understand.

------

I can see why controversy seems to follow this guy. Instead of whining and looking for handouts he just goes about his business of trying to be the best. There may be hope for us after all. Great choice to carry the flag.

Now there is a winning attitude that our athletes need to take to heart.

The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die

I thought I would start with a very light question this week. How many people do you know that are 60+ who are totally fulfilled with their career and their lot in life? What if you could find out a common set of principles that you could apply to achieve this goal for you? This week's podcast is with John Izzo, Ph.D and best-selling author of the Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die. This book came out of a television series that John did for the Discovery Channel. He spoke with more than 235 successful, mature adults and asked for their advice about careers, relationships and healthy living.

John has had a lifelong fascination with discovering what it means to live a full and meaningful life. It started when he was six years old and was further focused when his own father died at the young age of 36. His father's death was a defining moment in his life. He recognized that "you don't know how much time you have to live a life that really matters." John wondered if there would be a way of discovering a path sooner rather than later.

He and his teams started by asking more than 15,000 people for recommendations of individuals who were 55+ and whom they thought were happy and successful. They ended up with more than 1,000 recommended people that met this criteria. They further refined that list to 235 people, aged 59 - 105. This group had a wide range of professions, income and education. They ended up spending between 2-3 hours asking each of them a set of survey questions on a variety of issues. Here are some of the types of questions they asked this group:

What brought you the greatest joy?

What has brought you the greatest sense of meaning and purpose in life?

What is the greatest fear at the end of life?

What one sentence would you give to those younger than you on finding a happy and meaningful life?

Now that you have lived most of your life, what are you almost certain brings you happiness?

What they discovered from this group of people were a common set of elements that were consistent in each one of their lives. You may be thinking that they all started their lives growing up in a happy home. To his great delight, most of these people were not born "happy" but moved towards this end with work and discipline. He said, "they were people like all of us that had slowly navigated towards a better quality of life". All of them started at different points, but they all ended up in similar situations of authentic fulfillment in their lives.

Here is this wise groups recipe for a successful career:

3 things not to do in your career

Don't be greedy - Earn enough for what you need for your lifestyle.
Don't seek status, power and popularity - There is always another level to be achieved. You will never satisfy this if you chase it.
Don't worry about what other people think of you - A majority of people won't remember who you are in 10 years time.

3 things to do in your career

Do focus on you - You have to choose work that is true to your soul. Your work has to be in alignment with who you genuinely are.
Do maintain balance - listen to your life. At times you can spend more time at work and other times you will need to do less. Trust your intuition about balance in your life.
Do work that gives you meaning - When your work is bigger than you, the impact is amazing and more rewarding.
I recognize all of these are not easy to do all of the time, but if you are continually intentional about being aware of these things in your life, you will find things will slowly move in a positive direction. Remember, as John says, "you don't have to wait until you are 60 to be wise. We can discover the secrets to life at any age, the sooner we start practicing them, the more fulfilling our life will be."

P.S. The 5 Secrets from John's book:

Be true to yourself
Leave no regrets
Become love
Live the moment

What a typical gLiberal idea. Dion will create a HUGE government department, stocked with even more gLiberals, who will get billions to come to the conclusion that there is no collusion. See this for what it is: this is how Dion plans paying his debts off, instead of paying back the money he will simply make the people he owes money to heads of this department. Six figures, private jets, and pensions for all!!! Well, thanks to the taxpayers of Canada of course.

Exactly. It's right out of the Liberal "how to look busy while doing nothing and pay back debts" book.
